How your at-home DNA Tests could solve cold cases – Washington Post
Maryland and Montana are restricting police access to DNA databases – TechCrunch+
What is your opinion on the fact that law enforcement agencies can have access to open DNA data bases? Could you identify benefits and or disadvantages to this?
Some direct-to-consumer genetic services have updated their terms of service so users can opt out to have their information shared, however they also state that in the event of a formal request (ie. supoena, court order, warrant) the company may submitt the required information if available in their databases. Parallel to this, some states have included more specific rules for law informcemnt to have access to the consumer genetic data. Are these measures sufficient to safeguard consumer’s privacy? if not, what more could be done?
Given the ease of use and the availability of over the counter genetic testing kits, do you think that in the future we might be looking at genetic data being openly accessible for different purposes? would there be advantages outside of forensic investigations?
