Frank talks to one of his colleagues who mentioned she recently lost 9 kilograms (20 pounds) on a low-carb diet. Frank also read an article in a popular health magazine, where it talked about “good” and “bad” carbs. He then read somewhere else that carbs make you fat. After some research, he compiled a list of carbs that are thought to increase body fat. He also read about the “glycemic index” of carbohydrates and that it may be related to weight gain. It all sounded extremely complicated.
Frank decided that the best strategy for him would be to just lower his carbohydrate intake. This modification in his diet means that he is consuming more protein and fat than normal. In what represented a radical change for him, he eliminated potatoes, muffins, bread, pasta, and cereals from his diet. As he began to lose weight, he decided to exclude some fruits and vegetables that contain carbohydrates. After 2 weeks on his new diet, he is doing rather well—he has lost about 4.5 kilograms (10 pounds). Along with this diet, he joined a gym to work out. However, Frank has begun to experience some side effects. This diet makes him feel tired, he has trouble
concentrating, he is constipated, and his workouts have become more difficult. He also feels as if he has no endurance. A close friend commented that his breath smells odd. Frank becomes frustrated and confused at this point, and he feels he needs answers to his problems. He has decided to seek the advice of an old college friend who is working on a master’s degree in human nutrition.
