Unit 2 Discussion
First… Enter the Unit Two Discussion Board and post your proposed thesis statement for peer review. This is done by clicking the button labeled “Create Thread”. In the “Subject” box name the thread using your first name, last name followed by the word thesis (example John Smith Thesis). In the large text-box named “Message” write your thesis statement….then click “Submit”. Complete this first part of the assignment by 11:59 PM June 2.
Second…All students are required to post their thesis statements by June 2, so sometime after 11:59 PM, June 2 read the thesis statements posted by the two fellow students you have been assigned (see list on Unit Two Assignment page). This is done by finding the student’s “thesis thread” in the Discussion Board and clicking on his/her name. Next, provide feedback to the two students you have been assigned regarding their thesis statement. This is done by clicking the “reply” button under the “student’s post”. Complete this second part of the assignment by 11:59PM, June 3.
Peer Review Note: If one of the students you are assigned does not post his/her thesis statement by 11:59PM on June 2, then you are only responsible for giving feedback to your other assigned student. If both of the students you are assigned do not post their thesis statement by 11:59PM on June 2, I would suggest that you read some of the other thesis statements posted and the included feedback. This will give you the benefit of observing Peer Review, BUT you are only required to give feedback to the students you were assigned. If your assigned student(s) do not post a thesis statement, you obviously can not provide feedback. You will not be penalized…if you want, you may provide feedback to a student not assigned to you, but that is optional and NOT REQUIRED.
Note…Simply giving feedback like “this is good” or “this needs work” is not adequate to fulfill the assignment requirements. Your feedback needs to be specific and constructive. Example: If you were to review a thesis like “Texting while driving is bad”, you might give feedback something like this…”using the word bad in your thesis makes your topic too general. You might want to think about narrowing it down”.
I do not expect you to rewrite the thesis for your fellow student, but you must give objective, constructive feedback.
And finally, please, please remember to follow the standards of Netiquette…Common sense and courtesy tell us that we should use appropriate classroom language in a Discussion Board, that we should provide helpful comments, and we should be respectful of each other. A good rule of thumb is always reread what you have written before sending it off.

Unit 1 Assignment
Annotated Bibliography

For the purpose of this assignment assume you are gathering information for an essay directed at an audience with only a casual familiarity with your topic or issue.

Cite the source in proper MLA format. The citations should be organized in alphabetical order by author.
Follow each citation with a brief annotation, approximately 3-5 sentences is good.
Your Annotation “could” include a brief summary of the source, an explanation of why the source is important to your research and a statement that relates to the credibility of the author. Remember the key is to make annotations that help “you”.
You may write in a casual style in the summary BUT be cognizant of good grammar.
Open the word processing program on your computer and create your Annotated Bibliography.
Once completed ATTACH the word document with your Annotated Bibliography into the assignment area.
Remember, if you are not using Microsoft Word, convert your document to a PDF following the instructions in the Welcome Unit.

After reading and examining the “Essay Body” above (related to texting while driving) open the word processing program on your computer.

Part 2:
Second: Using two or three sentences (like with the Thesis, more is OK too) write what you consider would be a good Conclusion for the Sample Essay Body above . Remember, a Conclusion is basically a summary of the thesis statement that cites a few of the “major” details found in the Body.

To submit your rough draft open the word processing program on your computer and first write your essay rough draft. You are NOT required to submit citations or a bibliography in this rough draft, but I recommend you do. ENG102 English Composition II
Unit 3 Assignment
Survey
In this assignment you will “create” and “administer” a survey pertaining to the Persuasive Essay you will write for Unit Three.
Survey Requirements
The survey must relate to your Persuasive Essay’s topic.
The survey must consist of at least five questions.
The survey must be a “Rating Scale Survey” in which the respondents will answer the questions using a predetermined set of values. Example…Strongly Agree, Agree, Neutral, Somewhat Agree, Disagree.
You must administer your survey to at least five people (family, friends, whomever) either in person or by telephone.
In this assignment you will submit the “survey form” only(not the results). This means you will submit the questions asked in the survey and the answers participants will be allowed to select (not the answers actually given).
Click the link below to see aa example of whay your survey should look like.
Sample Survey.docx
Note: You will report the results of your survey in the Persuasive Essay itself, NOT in this assignment. Yes, I am well aware that a sample of only five participants that have been asked only five questions has little or no scientific validity, but this is simply an assignment. It is an exercise designed to remind you that a “comprehensive survey” can be a valuable tool in a research paper.
To submit your survey open the word processing program on your computer and first create your Persuasive Essay Survey. You can use the format I provided in the above link or you can use another. The important thing is that you provide the Survey Questions and possible Answers and that the survey uses a Rating Scale.
Once completed ATTACH the word document with the survey into the assignment area.
Remember, if you are not using Microsoft Word, convert your document to a PDF following the instructions in the Welcome Unit.

Assignment My Viewpoint One
I want you to enjoy this assignment. Your entry does not have to be long (approximately 375 words or so), but it must be thoughtful and opinionated. In “My Viewpoint Essay One” I want you to express your opinion on a social issue in today’s world. This issue can have global significance or simply be a local concern…It is up to you.
There are three steps in effectively writing a strong Viewpoint Essay:
Describe/explain the “Social Issue” you have selected. You “might” also write about how this “issues” effects your life (but you do not have to) and since this is a social issue you must write about how it effects others and society itself.
Explain what you believe are the causes of this issue
Explain how you believe the issue can be solved.
This essay expresses “your” opinion so write what you want, BUT please remember our earlier discussion on netiquette.
ENG102 English Composition II
Assignment My Viewpoint Two
As I stated in the first My Viewpoint Assignment, I want you to enjoy this assignment. Your entry does not have to be long (approximately 375 words or so), but it must be thoughtful and opinionated.
In “My Viewpoint Two” I want you to express your opinion on a work of Art or something in the area of Culture. PLEASE TAKE NOTE…I am very much broadening the conventional area of Culture and Art here so you can find a topic that interests you…Possible Topics: you can critique a movie you saw, a TV show, a play; you can give your opinion on an actor/actress/entertainer/writer etc; you can criticize or complement a clothing fashion; you can write about a topic related to education (even the college scandal involving Lori Loughlin); you can write about whether we need art in our lives and/or if the government should subsidize it; you can discuss whether video games or tattoos should be consider art; you can answer the question is TV viewing becoming obsolete, etc, etc…It is up to you. But remember, you are conveying your opinion in this short essay so select a topic in which you “have an opinion”.
There are three steps in effectively writing this Viewpoint Essay:
Tell the reader about the “Art/Culture topic” you have selected to write about. You need to give details to do this sufficiently… Example: I watched the movie titled “Steve Jobs” based on the book by Walter Isaacson about the Apple founder’s life.
Explain your opinion/position on the topic you have selected…Example: I watched the movie “Steve Jobs” starring Michael Fassbender and did not like the movie.
Explain why you have the opinion you have about your topic. …Example: I thought Michael Fassbender did a poor acting job in the movie and the plot was too limited.
Now, please take note, that in the above, I am giving “very short, limited responses”. Of course, you will give more detail in your essay.
This essay expresses “your” opinion so write what you want, BUT please remember our earlier discussion on netiquette.

Self-Paced Outside Feedback
OK, so you’ve been wondering…What is this “Outside Feedback Assignment” all about and how do I do it?
Well, first you need to finish writing a “preliminary version” of your Summary Essay on Malala Yousafzai’s Nobel Prize Acceptance speech (don’t submit it as an assignment yet).
Next, find someone to read your essay (a friend, relative, co-worker, fellow student not in this class, etc).
After he/she reads your “Summary Essay” you immediately ask him/her to answer the questions listed below. It is best to allow the person to hold the essay while you ask the questions and let him/her refer to it. This is true because the purpose of the questions is to measure how well you summarized the speech, not determine if the person has a good memory.
Finally, record the answers your source gave to the questions and submit them to me…that’s it.
Option: If you want you may make up your own questions and use them instead of the ones I have below…that’s up to you.
Question 1: What is Malala’s main cause?
Question 2: How did Malala resists what she thought was wrong?
Question 3: Who does Malala say she speaks for?
Question 4: Where did the events that change Malala’s life take place?
The answers your outside source gives will help you assess how well you have summarized Malala’s speech…Remember, we agreed that a well written “summary essay” clearly conveys the main ideas of a topic to the reader in such a way that he/she does not have to read the original text. These questions should help you find out if you accomplished this goal. If not, you should go back and modify the “preliminary version” of your essay before submitting it as your Finished Essay.
To submit your outside source assignment open the word processing program on your computer and write down the “Question Number” and your outside source’s response (Example Question 1: Education). If you use your own question(s) you must provide me the full question(s) AND the responses.
Once completed ATTACH the word document with the survey into the assignment area.
Remember, if you are not using Microsoft Word, convert your document to a PDF following the instructions in the Welcome Unit.
