Client 1 – Jan is a 47 yr old woman, previously sedentary,
She is 5’7″ tall and weighs 187 lbs. She is a complete novice to exercise. She has never smoked and has no family history of heart disease. She does report a history of mild pain above her left kneecap when performing weight bearing exercise (so mild that she is unwilling to pay to seek medical attention). She is seeking personal training services to help her lose weight and become fitter, with the long-term goal of running a half-marathon next year. Describe how you would get her fitter for an initial 12-week period as she begins training,
Client 2 – Tom is a 21 yr old, athletic man.
Specifically Tom is a track athlete (110 & 400m hurdle) at a Div III college. He is very active and has no risk factors. However, his college does not employ a strength and conditioning coach and Tom feels that if he improved his strength he would be a better athlete. He is seeking your services over the summer break (12 weeks from late May – Early August) in an attempt to improve his strength & power.
How would you treat these clients?
From first meeting them, what would you do? Include everything from health screening to Mobility assessment, initial exercise program for strength and cardio, testing & evaluation. Use the ACE IFT model to guide you in helping these clients safely and efficiently achieve their goals.
Follow the ACE IFT model –
Briefly outline how you will guide your client through each phase of the ACE IFT model
Briefly explain what you would do in each phase, how long you would anticipate spending time in that phase before progressing to the next phase – we highly suggest dividing your treatment of each client into these phases: i.e. “phase 1 – Tom:”, and then describe what you would do for that period.
Details – provide explanations of what you would assess (surveys, mobility tests, etc. for phase 1, then exercise progressions for latter phases) and the exercise you would prescribe. For exercise, be mindful of the acronym FITT-VP, what tells us that all exercise should include a description of Frequency (# days per week), Intensity (how hard will they work?), Time (# minutes invested per workout), Type (mode of exercise, i.e. running, biking, rowing machine, specific free weight exercises, etc.) – Volume (total workload, sets x reps) Progression (how will you increase volume and intensity over time)
