A Tale of Two Teachers
Watch the TED talk below “A Tale of Two Teachers” which discusses negative and positive experiences students can have with teachers in relation to cultural diversity. Then read and respond to the discussion prompt.
People often do not remember what was exactly said to them, but they will always remember how someone made them feel (e.g. Ashamed, embarrassed, angry, defeated etc.). The speaker discusses the main reason some parents will remove their students from schools as “their child having a negative interaction with a teacher. The speaker also discusses how teachers bring and apply their own cultural background and perspective to the students they teach which can represent underlying bias towards students different from them. Key factors in the discussion is to get teachers to reflect on their own biases and work proactively to broaden their perspectives to benefit all of their students.
Have you ever had a negative experience with a teacher based on your cultural/social background or some other factor? How it made you feel, and how it may influence the way you would, as a teacher, treat a similar student differently.
