Henry is a 4 year-old boy who has “always been a picky eater” according to his mom, Cheryl. Henry tends to like apples, grapes, bananas, pasta, pizza, cereals and most breakfast foods. So far, it has been very challenging to get Henry to eat most vegetables. In conversations with his mother, she reports providing Henry with 1/2 cup portions of cooked peas, broccoli, carrots, corn or green beans, but Henry will not touch them. He won’t even eat a food if it’s touching or mixed in with the vegetables. Cheryl knows that getting Henry to like vegetables is important, since they contain a lot of vitamins and minerals. She currently has resorted to requiring Henry to at least take a bite of every food on his plate before he gets up, but often this results in crying and tantrums, and she doesn’t think it’s working. Henry seems to be growing consistently, and has been between the 40th and 50th percentiles for BMI-for-age for the last 2 years. His height has been at the 75th percentile for the last 2 years. She is not worried about his growth or weight, but is worried his diet could become overly restrictive.
