This discussion reviews a key concept that you likely learned in previous English classes, including ENGL 112: how to incorporate source material into your writing to support your ideas.
POST 1
For your BY WEDNESDAY post, read the contextual material and follow the directions below. Post by Wednesday for 2 post-by-Wednesday points and 6 points for quality and timing.

When you are ready, click on the Reply button, label your post as a BY WEDNESDAY post and answer the following question. Sign your post when you are finished.
Review/Practice writing your own “source sandwich” paragraph. Write about the scope of your problem. How big and/or how urgent is the problem you are researching?
Be sure to include
a claim about the scope of the problem (this is also known as a topic sentence)
supporting details from your sources (Add author tags and/or in-text citations to indicate where you got your ideas)
1-3 sentences of commentary about your source information
For our convenience, please post the URL for the source you used. That way we can see how effectively you wrote about the material in your own words.
POST 2
For your CLASSMATE RESPONSE post, follow the directions below. Post on a second day for up to 6 additional points. You may respond to as many classmates’ posts as you would like and have time for.
When you are ready, find the classmate who posted immediately below your BY WEDNESDAY post, click on the reply button under their post, label your post CLASSMATE RESPONSE, address him/her by name, and answer the following questions. Sign your post with your preferred name when you are finished.
Read your classmate’s paragraph and offer him/her feedback on the following:
You created / didn’t create a topic sentence that made a claim about how big or how urgent the problem is. (Add comments as needed or desired.)
You effectively supported / didn’t support the topic sentence with details from one or more sources. You closed / did not close the paragraph with some commentary on the source information, especially how/why it supported your points. (Add comments as needed or desired.)
You tagged or cited / did not tag or cite the source. (Add comments as needed or desired.)
(If any source material was quoted) You identified / did not identify the speaker beforehand. (Add comments as needed or desired.)
What I like about your paragraph is ____. But I recommend you improve ___. (Add comments as needed or desired.)
Be sure to address these questions to your classmate. Use you/your in your feedback. Also, be concrete and specific when offering feedback.
POST 3
THERE IS NO FOLLOW UP POST AGAIN THIS WEEK. Instead, use your time to your working outline and annotated bibliography into a draft of your essay (see my comments in the gradebook). You will receive 6 points in lieu of a FOLLOW UP post.

Choose one of the paragraphs from either Jake’s or Joe’s student sample essay and “reverse engineer” it. What do you notice in this paragraph?
When you are ready, click on the Reply button and answer the following questions. Sign your post when you are finished.
Choose one of the paragraphs and paste it into your discussion post.
If you read Jake’s essay, choose para. 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, OR 9
If you read Joe’s essay, choose para. 2, 3, 5, or 6
Then
Use black font for sentences you believe are Jake’s/Joe’s ideas
Use red font for the sentences you believe came from his sources
Use blue font for any author tags or citations you see
Does the paragraph look like a sandwich, in that Jake/Joe begins and ends his paragraphs with his own ideas with source material as support in the middle? Why/why not?
How did Jake/Joe help you see when he switched from his own ideas to the source’s ideas and back to his own ideas again?
What APA conventions and punctuation did Jake/Joe use to indicate quoted material? Paraphrased material?
When Jake/Joe quoted material, did he identify the speaker of the quote beforehand?
