Assessment and Screening
Drug Use among Diversion Populations
Think about the articles by Roberts (1999), Halkitis, Fischgrund, and Parsons (2005), and Marsiglia et al. (2004). Each of these articles describes a unique population of substance users. For each, briefly discuss the unique aspects of substance use, implications for treatment, and potential facilitators and barriers to treatment for these populations within the criminal justice system. Be sure to address cultural and demographic factors unique to these populations.

Week 3 Discussion
Assessment and Screening
Consider the article by Hirschtritt et al. (2018) and articles read during week 2. How are these articles related to screening and assessment? What specific lessons can be learned from these readings that would inform screening and assessment procedures?
The articles by Camplain et al. (2020) and Leiber et al. (2017) discuss race and ethnicity within the contexts of alcohol-related arrests and the juvenile court system and previously you learned about social constructions. Describe how these things might affect screening and assessment in criminal justice settings?

Treatment Effectiveness and Relapse
Based on Sugarman et al.’s (2020) review of interventions for incarcerated adults with opioid use disorder, why are evidence-based interventions that address both opioid use disorder and the social determinants of health needed? How do you think the criminal justice system can address social determinants of health in their treatment programs?

Article Reflection Paper 1
Students are expected to review three academic research articles throughout the course, during weeks 2, 4, and 6. Specific topics to address in each reflection paper will be posted to Canvas. Students should answer the question posed for each reflection paper; however, students may also offer their own reflections on what they have read. Personal reflections should be based on literature read during the course and demonstrate critical engagement with the article. Reflections that are based solely on opinion without supporting evidence will receive a lower score. Each paper will be 1-2 pages in length. Be sure to follow APA style guidelines when writing.
Reflect on the article by Reinarman and Levine (2004). Describe ‘drug war mythology’ and how it is related to the idea of social construction. In your reflection, address relevance for individuals entering the criminal justice system.

Research Paper and Presentation
Each student will write a research paper on a topic of their choice; however, the research paper should focus on some aspect of cultural factors and substance use and treatment in the criminal justice system. Examples of topics for the research paper include:
A comparison of treatment approaches for opioid use disorder in prisons among various populations
Specific factors related to substance abuse treatment for incarcerated women
A review of drug courts and outcomes among juveniles by race/ethnicity
Approaches to tailoring substance abuse treatment for gay and bisexual men
Cultural factors that may influence treatment uptake among Latinos
Each paper must include:
Title page
Main body of the research paper
References cited
The title page should include the student’s name, research paper title, course title, and date. The main body of the research paper should be approximately 7 pages, not including the title page or the references cited. It is recommended that students use 12-point Times New Roman font. Papers should be double-spaced and include one-inch margins all around. Be sure to follow APA style guidelines when writing.
The references cited should be in APA format. A minimum of five references is required from peer-reviewed academic journals. Examples of peer-reviewed academic journals include the articles required to be read for this course. Journal articles should be relatively recent (past 5 years), although some older articles may be used for contextual or background information. Besides the five peer-reviewed journal articles, additional citations may be included, such as a scholarly book. Citations from websites, podcasts, television news, blogs, etc. are generally not appropriate for an academic research paper.
Please feel free to contact me if you have questions about the research paper. The required readings for this course will likely be a good place for you to begin your paper, to generate ideas, or even to cite in your paper. In addition, there are several literature reviews included on Canvas. These reviews will be a great resource to help you locate additional journal articles and flesh out your understanding of your topic.
Based on the research paper, each student will prepare a short (10-12 minute) video presentation during the last week of the course. Your presentation should include PowerPoint slides. The presentation can be scheduled during week 2 of the course and will be conducted using Zoom. It is suggested that you familiarize yourself with the Zoom procedures well in advance of the last week of class. This will give you plenty of time to ask questions and prepare.
For the presentation, please use the “share webcam” feature. This allows the recording to see you the presenter, in addition to your slides. This is an opportunity practice and showcase your presentations skills, in addition to your skills at making slides. In addition, please do not read your slides. Use your slides to show a few key points or visual aid. You should elaborate on these things and demonstrate the knowledge you gained during your research.
Please pay attention to the due date. Your paper is due early in the week. You should submit your paper through Canvas .
