Scenario 1:  Imagine you have been chosen to participate in a study about risk factors for human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. HPV is a virus that is a necessary cause of cervical cancer (i.e., 100% of cervical cancers are the result of HPV infection). HPV infection is also a major cause of anal, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers. It is mainly transmitted via sexual contact. 

If a researcher conducting the study asked you in a face to face interview about the number of sexual partners you have had in the past year, would you answer honestly? What if he/she was your age and very attractive? What if she looked like your mother? What if you were asked to write down the number of sexual partners you have had in the past year on a piece of paper that you were then going to turn into the researcher (the paper would not have your name on it, but would be marked with a unique identifier that would only be used to link all your data together in the study database)? Would you answer honestly? What if you were asked to respond via a secure website? Would you trust that that information could not be linked back to you?
