Getting started on Development
For this first discussion, please refer to Discussion Board 1.pdfPreview the document for specific questions you are to address in your initial post. The topics that you can choose from range from prenatal care, birth plans, infant feeding and sleep as well as impact of technology. Choose topics that you are interested in.
I know for some of you who might not have children or do not have a lot of interaction with children, some of these topics may feel more foreign, try your best to relate the material to real life, it’ll make these discussions a lot more meaningful and relevant beyond just learning the theory. For those who might have children or know some, I would definitely encourage you to share as much as it is relevant and you’re comfortable sharing, and at the same time, be cautious of NOT generalizing your personal experiences and assume that it applies to all children.
For discussions to be meaningful, it is important that you do research within your textbook and online, and then synthesize it in your own words. A meaningful discussion board post is one that clearly demonstrates you have thought about the questions, looked up information in your text and/or online, and then make informed decisions about what you will do to maximize your child’s development.
NOTE: While doing research is a part of parenting and maximizing child development, I am not looking for a large amount of copying and pasting directly from a website without you having read through the material (even if you do credit your source, giving me that information doesn’t tell me what you know and why you made these decisions). So make sure you do your research and then put it in your own words.

Discussion 2
Kindergarten Readiness
To wrap up our cognitive development modules, I want you to focus on a big milestone in many children’s lives – When they start Kindergarten. Here’s an article that looks at different kindergarten around the world (Links to an external site.).
Please answer the questions below in your initial post:
1. In what ways might Kindergarten curriculum, cultures and expectations in the US today be developmentally appropriate or inappropriate?
2. How might we improve our children’s outcome by learning from other cultures?
3. If we were to redesign aspects of our kindergarten, what would you focus on, and why?
4. Given many of our schools had to transition to be “online” this past few months, what are your thoughts on how realistic and developmentally appropriate it is for Kindergarten-aged children to learn effectively via “Zoom” class? Why or why not?
While you do not post to answer all the questions below, I want to invite you to think back to your kindergarten experience and use the following guiding questions for your background research:
1. What does kindergarten look like now in the US?
What’s their schedule like?
How many recesses do they get?
What do they learn about?
What are the expectations academically, physically, and socially?
What are the indicators that a young child is kindergarten ready and would likely?
Are expectations for kindergarteners really developmentally appropriate?
2. What are other countries doing for Kindergarten?
What’s their schedule like?
How many recesses do they get?
What do they learn about?
What are the expectations academically, physically, and socially?
What are the indicators that a young child is kindergarten ready and would likely?
Are expectations for kindergarteners really developmentally appropriate?
3. This is where I hope your creative juices come in. Given what you have now researched about US kindergartens vs. other places in the world, if we want our children to be successful future citizens and leaders of the future, what should an ideal kindergarten look like? Talk about the design of your kindergarten, what you would teach them and other expectations?
4. Apply what you’ve just researched and learned from the chapters and think about how our recent changes may or may not have been developmentally appropriate?

Discussion 3
Social and emotional development
Hello everyone,
Since we are talking about Theories of Social and Emotional Development (Chapter 9 & 10), think about the following questions and answer them in your discussion boards.
1. Name 1 common issue (social or emotional) you might have observed in your own lives or from others’.
2. Pick two theories from the text and how they might explain the “origin” or source of these issues and what might be a solution for it.
I’m going to use an example (don’t use this one in your post, but this hopefully will give you a sense of what I’m looking for). Some children often show resistance going to school to the extent that they lie about being physically sick. What might Watson (a Behaviorism theorist) explain a child not wanting to go to school vs. Carol Dweck from a social cognitive perspective? Also how might each of them offer a solution to parents, teachers or the child to resolve this issue.
Note that it is the depth and thoughtfulness of your reflections that counts. While you are not judged by the amount of words you include on the discussion board and I don’t want you to stretch and simply “talk” for talking’s sake, what I have observed in the past with discussion boards is writing at least one to two thoughtful and reflective paragraphs for each sub questions using critical lens to look at your own thought process and/or the material presented to you.

Discussion 4
Gender Portrayal in Media
For this module’s discussion, I want to encourage you all to take a look at how gender is portrayed in the media and how children might be influenced in various developmental aspects as a result (e.g. Disney movies, TV shows, commercials,… etc). For instance, awhile back, there was a picture that went viral on the internet of a little girl dressed as a nurse with a boy who dressed as a doctor and people calling it sexist. In this discussion, I would like for EACH of you to find
1. SPECIFIC examples of how gender is portrayed in various media (Find at least 2 or more);
2. how it might influence children’s perception of gender, gender roles and how they express/identify themselves at various age (e.g. age 2, 5, 10 vs. adulthood)
3. what do you think happens when children do not necessarily fit the stereotypes or norms of their sex/gender?
4. what do you think is the best way for parents to approach a child if they do not conform to traditional and stereotypical gender roles and expression and WHY?
Initial post (no more than 300 words) due by Friday and
Respond to at least two colleagues’ post by Sunday
Final tip for a successful and effective post or response includes an original idea that is backed up by theory and empirical data whenever appropriate, and contributes to the overall discussion beyond what has already been said!

Discussion 5
Poverty on Child Development
Hi class,
Before engaging in this discussion, think about the following question:
a. What are some common characteristics associated with poor people? (You do not need to believe them yourself, it can be what you have heard from others.)
b. How do you know if these characteristics are true or not?
c. How do you think poverty impacts individuals’ development in general? How might children’s development be impacted as a result of poverty?
To prepare for this discussion board,
1. Watch
My Dad is A Liar! (Links to an external site.)
My Dad is A Liar!
2. Imagine you’re the single father in the video
3. Go to http://playspent.org/ (Links to an external site.) and play the simulated game and see if you can last a whole month.
When you finish the game, use the table in the worksheetPreview the document to think about
1) What are the various “needs” that popped up in the game (e.g. “need to buy food” would fall under physical development within the context of our course),
2) what happens on a family level when those needs are not fulfilled,
3) what happens to a child’s development if that specific need is not fulfilled, and finally
4) what are some things that we can do, as individuals, communities, agencies, or governments to create real changes?
For the discussion, everyone please:
Share as much as you are comfortable about what this simulated game was like for you, what was something new that you learned about yourself, poverty and its impact on development, as well as possible ideas of what you might do to help tackle issues related to poverty in our society.
