QUESTIONS:
Using the context below, In 5+ sentences, share how their posting reinforces your understanding of the scientific method. Provide constructive, thoughtful feedback designed to build an engaging dialog. For example, can you guess what your classmate’s research goal is based upon the details provided? You can also, expand upon the discussion through the sharing of additional websites, articles, interactive tutorials, or videos relevant to your classmate’s area of interest or concepts addressed. PLEASE INCLUDE APA REFERECNES.
CONTEXT:
Observe and ask: What are you interested in studying?
A topic that I would be interested in researching is why men cheat on pregnant partners.
Look for information: What does the empirical literature have to say on your topic of interest? Briefly describe, in four sentences or more, one empirical study pertaining to your topic. (cite and reference)
In a study called “Changes in Sexual Desire in Women and Their Partners During Pregnancy” (Fernández-Carrasco et al., 2020), research was conducted to discover the levels of desire in both partners during pregnancy. While this doesn’t wholly pertain to my topic, it could have some correlation between sexual urges during pregnancy and partner infidelity. The study concluded that the “first trimester of pregnancy is when women have less sexual desire” (Fernández-Carrasco et al., 2020). Men during this period have higher levels of solitary desire, equaling a mean deviation of +9.37. As the pregnancy progresses, the level of desire in men toward their partner decreases. The study notes that this can be for several reasons, such as the changes in their partner’s body, the perceived potential of harming the fetus, and changing views of their partner as becoming a mother versus the sexual being she once was.
Hypothesis: What is your testable hypothesis? Present operational definitions for your independent and dependent variables.
My testable hypothesis is men cheat when their partner is pregnant due to their partner’s waning sexual desire. Independent variables are if the woman experienced complications during the pregnancy, if their partner doesn’t want to have sex, if men see their pregnant partner as less attractive, and other reasons that can be written in. The dependent variable is why the partner cheated.
Research Design: Provide a rough look at the inner workings of your research design.
Participants: How many participants do you think you will need to establish a representative sample of your target population? (Why this number?)
I will need at least 385 subjects for a 95% confidence level.
Whom would you like to include in your sample? (Explain.)
Men between the ages of 20-40 that have cheated on their pregnant partner.
Procedures: Share an idea for procedures you could follow to test your hypothesis.
It would need to have an anonymous online survey. Because I would rely on self-reporting, there would need to be a code to access the survey so that complete anonymity can be guaranteed. Platforms in which the survey could be advertised are TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram.
What is one confounding variable you should plan for?
Because it is a self-reported survey online, there may be dishonest infiltrators.
Ethics in Action: List two principles of ethics you must keep in mind while designing this study.
One ethical consideration is maintaining 100% anonymity. Things such as the location of the subject, identifying physical features, and contact information will not be included. Another ethical consideration would be to honestly represent the purpose of the study.
Class contributions to terminology: while preparing your answers to Items 1-5, what terms or concepts challenged you? Provide here one term, or concept, that felt rusty in its application. Provide a link to a resource the explains, or defines that term.
While I took statistics during the summer, I still had to look up the independent and dependent variables and try to apply them to my study. In my topic, it would be easy to spiral away from the hypothesis and study other factors.
