INTERACTION How we act in a group depends on how we behave as a follower and as a leader. What factors affect followership and leadership? Followership Culture. This is a set of behaviors, attitudes, norms and customs of a group of people passed from one generation to another. All of us are part of a group and so molded by culture. We behave and act according to how we are molded by the people around us. We become part of the community as we follow the culture we were molded into. However, as what we have discussed in the first quarter, as we grow older, we learn new customs and traditions and from there we decide which to accept and follow. Conformity and Obedience. As followers, we conform and obey. Conformity is defined as "the tendency of an individual to align their attitudes, beliefs and behaviors with those of the people around them." Conformity can occur consciously or unconsciously without the influence of social status or authority. Obedience on the other hand influences one’s behavior through a social status. We obey someone we perceive to be of higher social status. There were several studies conducted and below are just 3 of the many experiments on the said topic. Ask yourself, why do you obey? Why do you conform? How can you be sure that you know what you are doing? Are you a good and productive follower? How do these affect your relationship with your friends and peers? Leadership Leadership is the ability of an individual to influence and motivate others. With this definition, we can say that somehow in our own way, we are leaders. Leadership Styles STYLE DESCRIPTION Autocratic Uses a high level of power and provides very few opportunities to followers in giving suggestions Bureaucratic Conservative in nature and focuses on following the rules and procedures Democratic Gives more opportunities to followers but makes the final decision People-oriented Focuses on developing people in a team; the leader is a nurturer Task-Oriented Focuses on the task; getting the job done is more important Transformational Inspires the team; delegate tasks to followers and spends time communicating with followers Discussion Leadership styles vary based on one’s personality. This may also depend on the situation or your function as a leader. Go back to the Formative Assessment in this chapter, what do you think are the appropriate leadership style of each person and why? There are different explanations about our obedience and conformity. There are instances that we may unconsciously conform but it is important to use our critical thinking whenever we follow leaders and authorities. In leadership, we have learned that there are various leadership styles. Different authorities and professions may use different leadership style whichever is best for the profession. As such in our career decision making, our leadership style is also something that we have to consider.

And one such style of leadership that is essential for leaders to adept in order to achieve organizational success is democratic leadership. Great leaders use their superior problem-solving abilities to help a business develop in the midst of a crisis. They have the power to make or break it. Democratic group leadership functions best when participants are knowledgeable and motivated to impart their expertise. It’s crucial to give individuals enough time to input, formulate a strategy, and then vote on the best course of action. Setting deadlines can help you collect everyone’s feedback in time to act on it when there are so many individuals involved. It can also be beneficial to set expectations in advance by stating when the group’s participation will be sought and which decisions management will make independently. They uses this kind of leadership because Democratic leadership encourages group members to contribute their ideas, which can result in stronger concepts and more inventive solutions to issues. Group members are more inclined to care about the outcomes of initiatives because they feel more invested and dedicated to them. It allows lower-level workers to practice using the authority they’ll need to exercise responsibly in future jobs.
