THE HISTORY OF ARNIS

Arnis/Kai/Escrima-contributed to both history and diversity of the Philippines 

ARNIS-a native weapon-based martial art from the Philippines, like using blades or sticks 

– sometimes called a ” complete”  martial art

– comes from arnés, Old Spanish for “armor” (harness an archaic  Spanish term for armor)

-It is said to derive from the armor costumes used in Moro-moro stage plays where actors fought mock battles using wooden swords.

-The training usually starts with weapons before  moving to empty-hand techniques.        

Escrima/Eskrima- Filipinization of the Spanish word for fencing, esgrima.

– Their cognate in French is escrime

– English term ” skirmish”

Derived from the pre-Hispanic Filipino term blades and fencing is called KALI

-Kalis ( Spanish spelling “Calis”)

Documented by Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition chronicler Antonio Pigafetta during their journey through the Visayas
