Here is my unrevised draft of the argument of definition:
A photograph or photo is an image made by light dropping on a light-sensitive platform, usually photographic film or an electronic image such as a CCD or CMOS chip. Most of the time, photographs are made using a camera, which uses a lens to focus the scene’s visible wavelengths of light into a reproduction of what the human eye can see. The way and practice of making photographs are called photography. The word “photograph” originated in 1839 by Sir John Herschel and is based on the Greek φ ς, meaning “light,” and γραφή, meaning “drawing, writing,” together meaning ῶ, “drawing with light.” To be more specific on what a photograph exactly is and how it works, I would say during a timed exposure, a lens is typically used to focus the light that is reflected or emitted from objects into an actual image on a camera’s light-sensitive surface. This produces an electrical charge at each pixel with an electronic image sensor, which is processed electronically and stored in a digital image file for later display or processing. With photographic emulsion, an invisible latent image is created that is later chemically “developed” into a visible image—positive or negative, depending on the purpose of the photographic material and the processing method. Traditionally, an enlarger or contact printing is used to photographically create a positive image on a paper base, known as a print, from a negative impression on film. A good definition enables the audience to have a profound understanding and to learn about methods and measurements.
