Oftentimes, it may feel that dishonest gain is easy to come by and that because one can feel that it isn’t directly harming anyone, one can find “peace” in spreading lies. There are several consequences that this coworker could face for altering data.
Altering the data to make it say what he wants it to say could be damaging to his reputation and the reputation of our company, if the general public discovers that his data has been tampered with. “”A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.” Galatians 5:9. This would cause the general population to look at our company with disdain thinking that this particular coworker wasn’t just a “bad apple” but that in general, we’re all dishonest workers. Another repercussion to be considered is financial repercussions. If discovered that he’s lying, he could be terminated by management and it could tarnish his reputation with other companies, preventing future employment.
I would encourage my coworker to take his time, be thorough, and to be honest with his work. Slowing down and doing all the research necessary to ensure that the data presented is true, takes time and effort but will yield far better rewards than presenting falsified information. “The Lord detests the use of dishonest scales but he delights in accurate weights.” Proverbs 11:1. I would also encourage my coworker by letting him know that when we take our time and provide honest data, not only does it show forth our work ethic and abilities, but it also will show the company and our superiors in a positive light. Our company will gain trust in the eyes of those who listen to attention to our research and data. Most importantly, God is pleased with us when we’re honest. The scriptures tell us that God detests those who lie. So as christians, it’s imperative for us to be honest and truthful in everything that we do.
Statistically speaking, my coworker could use his same data and findings without altering them. By doing so, he could be presented with other research perspectives, findings, and data that could help him as he continues his research.
