Powell, Professor and head of the Othering and Belonging Institute defines belonging like this: “BELONGING, or being fully human, means more than having access. Belonging entails being respected at a basic level that includes the right to both cocreate and makes demands on society.” In this essay, you are writing an argument to answer the following question: Why does belonging matter in a classroom? How does belonging impact student achievement? How does a culture absent of belonging impact students?
