ART 1309 FORMAL ASIGNMENT
Purpose – The purpose of this assignment is to identify the site-specificity and to analyze the in-person viewing experience of a public artwork found on campus.
Skills – After doing this assignment you will be able to:
• Translate what you see into clear, structured writing
• Identify site-specificity in the TTU Public Art Collection
• Analyze the unique experience of viewing a work of art in person
Knowledge – After doing this assignment you will understand:
• How to make connections between a work of public art and its site (location)
• How viewing an artwork in person is different than viewing a reproduction of that same artwork Task – you should:
1. Look through the various platforms and/or social media sites listed here to get an overview of the TTU Public Art Collection. Choose from one or more of the following online locations:
• App: arTTrek (recommended)
• Website: https://ttuspublicart.com/
• Instagram: ttuspublicart
• Facebook: facebook.com/TTUSPublicArt
2. Select one work from the TTU Public Art Collection as the topic of your assignment. *Please note! You can NOT choose a work that was discussed during class on Monday, Oct 10. See list below.
3. Go visit it in person! Take photographs of your visit to your artwork of choice. With your paper, you will include photographs.

4. What is it? Describe the artwork.
a) Include the artwork title, artist’s name, date, and medium.
b) Describe the subject matter.
5. Where is it? Discuss the artwork’s site-specificity.
a) Describe the artwork’s location on campus.
b) Identify the way(s) in which we can consider this work site-specific.
c) Cite any sources used here; e.g. “According to the arTTrek App, …”
6. In-person viewing. Identify two or more aspects of this artwork that are best seen in person.
Describe as fully as possible and reference visually in at least one of the two photographs you submit with your assignment. Be as specific as possible. *Photographs need to be taken by you.
Criteria – Successful assignment submission will include:
• photograph ( photo – detail; emphasizes one of the in-person details you discuss in your paper.)
• Description of the artwork.
• Identification and discussion of site-specificity.
• Discussion of in-person viewing experience
