Part I:

Culture is defined as “The norms, values, practices, patterns of communication, language, laws,

customs, and meanings shared by a group of people located in a given time and place.”

Everyone has a culture—sometimes we have multiple cultures stemming from family and friends

and the multiple ways in which we define ourselves and are defined by those around us. For

your cultural narrative assignment, I would like for you to tell me about your culture. Or, you

can think of this assignment as telling me your history—your family story. This could be a

family memoir or family history. A family narrative often tells the story of ancestors,

grandparents, aunts, and uncles; of how the family came to be in a certain place; of how a family

business or tradition began; or of some other interesting aspect of the family, such as obstacles

overcome. Some family narratives tell of immigration, others of the Great Depression in the

1930s, and others of how family members did or did not survive the Holocaust. As with most

forms of narrative writing, a family narrative usually conveys a theme and has a point beyond the

story itself. However, some family narratives are written as histories to be passed on and might

be written for the sake of telling the story. Your story, though, does not have to take the form of

a family history. You may also tell me about your immediate family, your traditions, or the

family you claim as your own—they do not have to be blood relatives.

Part II:

In telling the story of who you are, I would like for you to discuss the importance of education in

your family as well. In other words, combine the factors above with the story of your family’s

education or educational viewpoints. What brought you to South Georgia State College and

what helped you decide that you want to become an educator? You may be the first in your

family to attend college or you may be one in a long line of college graduates. You may come

from a family of educators or a family that laments your decision to be a teacher, but talk about

how these issues have come to pass and their impact on you as a future educator.

Part III:

Lastly, discuss the ways in which you believe your culture will impact your classroom approach

and teaching philosophy. (And don’t say that it doesn’t, because it always does!) In this section,

develop a well-written philosophy of education that ties to one or more of our course topics.

How might your cultural values/beliefs influence your classroom approach and the kind of

teacher you will be in the future? How can you utilize your culture to better reach your students?
