Importance of Theory in Nursing
Importance of Theory in Nursing
For many students enrolled in NR501, this is an initial course for nursing theory. So, let’s have a debate. Is nursing theory important to the nursing profession? If you believe that it is important, explain why it is useful. If you do not believe that it is useful, explain why nursing theory is not necessary to the profession? Be sure to provide an example that demonstrates your opinion and a scholarly reference (not using the required textbook or lesson) which supports your opinion.

Week 2 Discussion
Collaboration Cafe
This week I would like for you to share an experience or situation in which you felt underprepared or challenged. The situation could be your first full code on a patient or visitor, a precipitous delivery, a patient dying, or many other situations in which you just did not feel like you had enough information or knowledge related to handling the situation. Afterward, you probably went over the scenario with others or in your mind with thoughts of what should I have done differently, what nuggets of wisdom can I add to my ever-growing knowledge and wisdom, etc. Please share one of these experiences with us and tell us what you learned from the situation as you self-reflect. How did this experience help you with other situations in your nursing career?
IMPORTANT NOTE: Your instructor will be monitoring the Collaboration Café but not participating as this is your opportunity to give and receive feedback from your peers. The Collaboration Café is graded this week (50 points). There are no scholarly references required in this discussion format. Please see the guidelines and grading rubric below.

Week 4 Discussion
Collaboration Cafe
This class presents various types of nursing theories and how the concepts of the nursing metaparadigm distinguish nursing theory from other theories we may use. Please share a nursing theory that you have found to be helpful to you in practice. Why is this nursing theory meaningful to you? Feel free to share an example of how this theory guides your practice as a nurse.

Week 5 Discussion
Analysis and Application of a Nursing Theory
Using the nursing theory you selected in the Week 4 Collaboration Cafe, consider how the following components would be included in an analysis of that theory:
Origin of the theory
Meaning of the theory
Logical adequacy of the theory
Usefulness of the theory
Generalizability of the theory
Degree of parsimony within the theory
Testability of the theory
What rationale can you provide which validates the selected theory as a framework for nursing practice? Be sure to include scholarly references to support your discussion.

Week 6 Discussion
Collaboration Cafe
While the focus of this course is nursing theory, frequently we use a non-nursing or borrowed theory to help us manage or guide a situation or change. Think of a time when you were involved in a situation or a change that needed to occur. If you feel you have not applied a borrowed theory in your practice can you think of a situation where applying a borrowed theory would be beneficial to your practice? Which non-nursing or borrowed theory do you feel was used or could be used to help guide this situation or change? Why was it important to use this theory for this situation? How did it help the situation or change occur?

Week 7 Discussion
Nursing Theory Applied to Evidence Based Practice
This week we are focusing on the application of nursing theories to evidence-based practice. This discussion can reflect on what you have been working on for your week 7 PowerPoint assignment due at the end of the week. For this discussion: Select an issue or concern related to nursing, then select a nursing theory or model that can be used as a framework to support the resolution of your identified issue/concern. In your initial response, address the following:
How the selected nursing theory or model is relevant to your specialty track
A brief description of the issue/concern
How the selected nursing theory or model can be used to guide the resolution of the issue/concern?
How does your philosophy of nursing connect to the application of theory to manage this situation?
Include an example from the literature or your own experience to illustrate your points. Remember to include at least one outside scholarly source.

Week 8 Discussion
Collaboration Cafe
As we bring this class to a close, I would like for you to reflect on this course. How will you use a current theory or envision a new theory that can be used to support evidence-based change related to your practice as an advanced practice nurse.
