Cultural Competence/Diversity
Cultural Competence/Diversity
Review and discuss your own cultural background. First, use the NASW Weblink or our textbook to give a definition of cultural competence. You might want to interview a family member about this topic – your own family ethnicity, social class, regional affiliations, etc. might all enter into what seems important to you. Consider the following issues:
Values: education, work, religion, success, cooperation/competition, treatment of others/ compassion, purpose of life, treatment of others who are work related or the value of friendship. These are just a few ideas, and as you ask questions, you may find new information.
As you did above with your own cultural background, now interview another person with a different cultural background from your own. Use the material above to think about your question guide. Then, in a separate paragraph, compare/contrast your own cultural experience to hers/his.
Write a conclusion. Include rationale as to why cultural competence is so important in social work, what kind of training you think would be helpful for new social workers, and re-capping what you have learned from this exercise.
