Children and Sports Children and sports — positive and negative outcomes • State the theory/ies (macro or micro-level) that you will use to discuss the experience and outcomes of children’s participation in sport (consider how these are related to the factors that shape the experience — i.e., the physical and mental development of young athletes). This is essentially your thesis. Choosing one or two theories will tell me a great deal about the argument/s you’re going to make. • Use your theory/ies to illustrate some key aspects of physical, emotional, and social development of young athletes. Consider the contexts in which socialization takes place, and discuss what or who may be involved, and who or what can influence the development of the athlete. • Provide examples of positive and negative outcomes in organized sport as compared with informal play (consider the pros and cons of the emphasis placed on competition and profit). • Discuss some of the factors that make organized sport beneficial or potentially harmful to young players. • Propose ways of improving sports for children, so that the experience of participation can lead to more of the better outcomes instead of negatives experiences that cause children to quit sports.
