1. It is a sad truth that there are a few examples of what is plaguing the health care system in the United States but one of the most recent ones that have happened is a physicians/ nurses shortage. In 2020 we were hit with the pandemic of Covid- 19, a virus that killed 6.58 million people. Doctors either stayed away from home and at work to be able to help patients and not get the rest of their family sick or they left their jobs to stay home with their families to prevent from spreading the virus or worse die from contracting it. I’m sure it was a very hard but understandable choice for the doctors but now the gap is growing and hospitals are losing doctors faster than replacing them. This is putting patients at risk because they are not being taken care of because there are so many patients and not enough doctors. Another thing that is plaguing the health care system is the high costs of care, many people in the united states have some type of insurance but many do not. For the people who do have health insurance to cover for doctor visits, medication, or therapy the insurance is only covering a percentage of that; therefore people are still having to come out of pocket to pay for the rest of the insurance bills. Now imagine if someone is in a really bad accident then they have to make multiple trips to the hospital, the cost to stay in the hospital, physical or mental therapy for after the accident will begin to add up and they could find themselves in debt very fast. This should not be the case because accidents are not planned and sometimes not preventable so why should the patients have to suffer even more financially for something they never seen coming. To enter the social work career you have a great deal of opportunity to work in many different practices with many different clients. One practice where you will be working with just a certain population is a sports clinic. A sports clinical social worker is there to help the athletes enhance the capabilities of themselves to address their own behavioral health and physiological needs. In this setting social workers are working solely with the population of athletes, so they would have to be able to build rapport with them to be able to communicate with them about their mental health needs. Another setting where social workers work with just one certain population is hospice care. Hospice is not a place per se, the care normally occurs at home or in nursing homes. Hospice becomes available when a patient faces a terminal illness or painful injury and is believed to have 6 months or less to live. Hospice social workers may visit the residents in nursing homes to conduct intakes but it is a team-oriented approach to expert health care , pain management and emotional and spiritual support that is tailored to the individual needs and wants.
2. I believe there are many things plaguing the healthcare systems today. One huge thing that I believe to be plaguing the healthcare systems is the costs, and financial instability. With inflation in the U.S from the pandemic, food and gas prices are not the only thing to increase in price. The cost of medical care, prescriptions, and hospital visits overall are insanely high. A lot of people in the United States do not have health insurance, so ultimately they pay out of pocket for any type of medical visits, and sometimes, can not afford their medications. Another thing plaguing healthcare is shortages on staff. The pandemic when it hit, changed so many things, especially within hospitals. A lot of nurses feared spreading the virus, so they stayed home and out of the hospitals because it was terrifying thought of working in a hospital, surrounded by patients with the virus, and risking brining it home to your loved ones. These are just two of the examples of what is plaguing the healthcare systems in the United States. In social work, there are so many different groups of people and different kids of social workers that specialize in these specific groups. For example, you have foster care workers who specialize in the safety and well being of children within foster care systems. They find appropriate and fitting foster homes for children. They also monitor and check in on the nourishment and safety and living conditions that a child is living in within that foster home. Social work deals with the most vulnerable populations. So children, the elderly, the poor, and people with disabilities are all populations within social work. Another population that I want to discuss is the poor. People living in poverty are at their lowest points and turn to social workers for help. Things these social workers can do that can help these people during these times are help them apply and get approved for food stamps, this way they can at least have a source of food. The social workers can also apply and try to help get them into group home and living facilities. There are so many different ways to help and advocate for vulnerable populations, and these are just some of them.
