Classification Essay Assignment Sheet

Your assignment is to write a classification essay using one of the topics listed on the “suggested topics” list.  Your essay should consist of an interesting introduction that interests the reader and leads to your classification.  You will most likely want to set the scene in the first paragraph or two.  Make sure that your topic is relevant to others.  You want your reader to relate to what you say and think, “That is SO true.” 

 The essay should have a thesis that makes a general comment about the subject.  The body of your paper will be composed of the various classification categories and descriptions of those things that fall into those categories  It is also important to have quality transitions from one class to the next.  Your conclusion will briefly summarize your information and make a general statement about your subject.  See the example essays for direction.

Remember that the thesis is ESSENTIAL (as it is in all papers).  Your thesis cannot simply be “There are many kinds of …….” or something equally general.  There needs to be a point, a reason, etc.  Why might people need to know about the kinds of bad drivers?  Or what explains why so many people waiting for prescriptions in the pharmacy are in a bad mood?  

Essays must be typed, double-spaced, 2.5—5 pages, and titled.  Pages should be numbered.

Criteria to keep in mind:

1. ORGANIZE this essay carefully.

2. Present an attention-getting lead in the first few lines.  Perhaps set a scene.  You will also need a thesis statement.  An essay map should be included.

3. Describe your categories thoroughly

4. Consider the importance of HUMOR in certain topics.  Consider naming your categories.  However, do not separate the sections with bold headings.  Rather, you need to use transitions to move from one category to the next.  

5. STAY away from the word “YOU!”

6. Stay away from topics that are only applicable to you and your life.  For example, if you are discussing the people in your family, make sure that it is universal in some way so that others can relate.  Make sure your categories address certain types of people that exist in ALL FAMILIES!!!

7. Don’t make it too much like a “story.”  This is about categorizing so that others can relate.

8. Be sure to include plenty of categories (but not too many!)

9. Give plenty of examples.  

10. Think about your sentence style.  Use variety in your sentence structure.

11. Use correct sentences.  Think about the various grammatical topics we have discussed lately.

12. Make sure to conclude EACH category.  

13. Be consistent with singular and plural.

Classification Essay Topics

Your assignment is to classify these different groups and describe each group.  This essay can range from very serious and formal to more humorous and relaxed.  Obviously, the topic will dictate what style and tone you use.  Remember that your job is to describe each different group thoroughly and support a main point that will be evident both in your thesis and your conclusion.  The more specific you can be with your topic, the more effective the paper will be.  So, for example, instead of writing about the kinds of kids in high school (TOO BROAD), that’s just a starting place.  Write about the different kids in a certain organization like band, art club, or the football team.  These topics are mostly just a “starting place” but it’s up to you to make it more unique.  Focus it on what/who you know!  The best papers typically come from something that is unique to you and your experiences.  You will want to narrow and focus most of these topics.  For example, if you choose “kinds of parents” you will need to focus that more specifically.  Examples:  beauty pageant moms, parents at sporting events, parents in the grocery store, dysfunctional parents, parents of toddlers, stay at home mothers, divorced dads, etc.

3. Different types of people you would see somewhere (a high school sports event, a bowling alley, a doctor’s office, and amusement park, or a store, etc.)  DO NOT WRITE ABOUT THE MALL!!!!!

4. Different types of annoying people (narrow this down).  Maybe choose a PLACE where one would encounter these people (in a movie theatre, at a family reunion, at a PTO meeting, etc.)

5. Different types of hunters, fisherman, athletes, etc.  

6. Difference kinds of co-workers or bosses

7. Different types of people in certain organizations or groups (churches, bands, sports teams, etc.)

8. Different types of college students

9. Different types of gamers

10. Different types of customers somewhere

11. Different types of sports fans

12. Different types of geeks or nerds

13. Different kinds of nurses, doctors, dentists, etc.
