Sample Response: Law #1: Murder is Forbidden In my ideal society, planned and premeditated murder would be absolutely forbidden and punishable by life in prison. This law is important because I want to ensure that all my family, friends, students and community members are kept safe from such a horrific action. First degree murder is the worst type of murder in our society because it is often done with malicious aforethought. This means that the killer knew what they were doing; they had a plan and they acted upon that plan without influence or any disease of the mind. It means: they wanted to kill. When a murder happens, it is not just a crime against an individual; it is a crime against all of society, which is precisely why the government, or crown prosecutor, steps in to prosecute these crimes. In our society, a crime against one person is a crime against all people. Murders often involve the use of weapons, including guns. I believe that in order for this law to function properly, our society needs to have stricter gun control laws to ensure that access to guns is severely limited. In addition to this, greater criminal and financial penalties need to be issued to those who access illegal firearms to help deter people from accessing them. While in Canada, gun crime is a serious issue, the reality is that there is an even bigger concern about gun violence in the United States due to their citizens’ constitutional right to bear arms. When a murder happens, it makes all of us fearful; it makes us realize that in some cases, if the circumstances were different, we could have ended up being the victim of a crime For example, many people often go to the movie theatre to watch movies after school or on the weekends. When a big blockbuster, like Spiderman, or Harry Potter comes out, the numbers of people who attend theatres go through the roof. Theatres often engage in promotional tactics to draw in large crowds on "opening night" as a means of creating a buzz and boosting their revenue. When people in Aurora, Colorado went late at night to see the third installment in the Batman series, The Dark Knight Rises, in 2012, they weren’t anticipating the horror that was about to unfold before their very eyes. Dressed as the Joker and armed with multiple firearms, James Holmes wasn’t just an ordinary excited guest dressed up in costume: he was there to kill. In a crowded threatre, Holmes set off tear gas into one of the theatre’s rooms and opened fire on the crowd. His horrific act of violence caused the death of 12 individuals and injured 70 others. This mass murder was one of the most shocking crimes I had ever heard of because I, too, had watched Batman in a theatre. Hearing of the victims he killed and injured was absolutely heartbreaking, it was such a senseless act of violence. Recently, I heard that James Holmes had been spared the death penalty. I agree with this punishment because I think all people who commit vicious and violent crimes, such as murder, should spend the rest of their life alone, locked up from society. Killing the criminal gives them an easy way out; their conscience is wiped clean with their death. Living with a guilty conscience and knowing you were responsible for the hurt and pain for countless individuals is the fairest punishment of all for those who murder with premeditation
