This week’s Zoom assignment addresses the issue of handling conflict. Each scenario will feature a manager and an employee. Teams will remain the same from the first Zoom session in this course. Students on the team are encouraged to email and communicate with each other regarding date and time for the session to be held. If a group is assigned three members then each person must serve as an observer once (resulting in the need for three role play sessions).
ONLY RECORD ONE OF THE ZOOM SESSIONS FOR SUBMISSION
The exercise is designed for use in a two-person team. There are two scenarios included in the exercise, and the team should only work with one scenario at a time. For each scenario, one person will play the role of the Manager and one person will be the Employee. There will not be a need to have an observer, unless you are assigned a team of three.
If in a team of two, for each scenario there are role instructions for both the Manager and the Employee. Each member is encouraged to use the scenario checklist when they play the role of the Manager. In the first scenario the Manager reads his/her role, followed by the Employee.
Notes can be taken during the interaction or as a debrief based on what happened.
If in a team of three, the Observer should use this to take notes during the interaction within the scenario he or she is observing. For example, in the first scenario one team member reads the Manager role, a second team member reads the Employee role, and the Observers take notes.
Instead of having a debrief session, each observer will submit a written assignment as detailed below.
Case Study: Davidson, M. (2002). Saying what needs to be said: Role-Plays.
Step 1 – Prior to the Zoom session it is helpful if each student must read his or her role and understand what is taking place. Displaying a lack of knowledge of what your role and opinions are, based on the case study sheet, will affect your final grade for this assignment. It is helpful to decide ahead of time who will play which role for Scenario 1 and Scenario 2.
Step 2 – Verify which zoom session will be recorded and submitted by the group. This is to verify the role play took place. When ready:
Make sure to hit “Record.”
Introduce each person and the role each will play in this Zoom session.
Begin the role play. Each person reads his or her role (Manager reads first). Following both roles read, the Manager initiates the conversation. This can be done by asking the employee “How are you doing today?”
Step 3 – If there is an observer, he or she should turn off their mic and video. They should not be seen in the recording.
Step 4 – Let the process and conversation play out naturally between the Manager and the Employee following the reading of each role. The intent for each role is to understand the conflict and try to work through it.
Step 5 –The “Observer” role should be taking notes from the handout included in the case study (SCENARIO CHECKLIST).
Step 6 – Once complete, end the recording. The recording will save automatically. Follow the instructions on Canvas to see how to submit the recording as part of your assignment.
Step 7 – Once the first recording is saved, start the next Zoom session and reverse roles.
Repeat steps as needed.
Your “recorded” Zoom session should be between 5-10 minutes in length.
Each team member must include the team’s Zoom link on the final page of their assignment and must be under the heading “TEAM ZOOM SUBMISSION”. Failure to include the link on your paper will result in a 50% reduction on the papers final grade.
Write a 2-3 page debrief about:
• How did the session start out once the roles were read? What were your impressions of the role play?
• What were the issues? How was the conflict addressed?
• Provide evidence of what you observed, in the other person under the ‘To What Extent Did You…” Use these sections as a starting point in your assignment. Answer the following:
• What emotions were shown? By who and in what way?
• In what ways did either party express concern, support, judgement, empathy?
• Pick a role (Manager/Employee) – What would you have done differently in the conversation to address the conflict and then what solutions would you recommend improving the working relationship.
o Requirements: Each paper submitted in this course must have a title page and a reference page. You must include the Zoom link at the end of the written page (prior to the reference page). Proper APA 6th Edition must be followed. If you need assistance with APA please refer to the “APA Student Paper” handout or visit Purdue Owl at https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/10/ .
