Dialogic Theory of Public Speaking
Order Instructions
Now that you’ve studied both sections of Chapter 1: Why Public Speaking Matters Today, and taken the quiz, you’ll want to spend time reflecting back and developing your understanding of the “Dialogic Theory of Public Speaking” in Section 1.2. The following video will also help to reinforce your learning:
Kelsey Paiz. (2018, February 8). Ch 1: Public Speaking (Part 5 of 6) [Video]. YouTube.

Ultimately, you’ll need to formulate your reaction to one of the following prompts. Choose just one of these three:
1. What did you discover about the Dialogic Theory of Public Speaking? Explain what you understand about it. In your own words share what you have learned about this theory.
2. Why do you think this theory could be considered the “cornerstone” to our approach to public speaking? (Support your insight with personal perspective of what you learned.)
3. How do you foresee the Dialogic Theory of Public Speaking influencing your ability to plan, develop, and present speeches in this class and beyond?
Create a paragraph of no fewer than 10-12 sentences which addresses the one prompt you have chosen. FYI: Your text provides more detail on Dialogic Theory so feel free to refer to both text and video when building your discussion. Then post your original writing to the Discussion Board. (We are not simply copying and pasting; we want to hear what you think about this theory.)
Finally, review and comment on as many of your classmates’ writings as possible. Communicate with a minimum of 3, but remember, you’re not just posting a sentence or two. Do your best to develop your writing so that you’re moving the conversation forward. Those are the types of responses we’re looking for throughout this communications class. Always plan to go a step further. Engage your classmates in a conversation (a dialogue) about what they are concerned with or interested in. Talk to each other like you are in the same classroom– because you are!
Take a look at the Discussion/Response Assignments portion of the syllabus for examples of postings that demonstrate higher level thinking. There are also examples of how you can develop responses to your classmates.
(Finally, you’ll want to review the Discussion/Response Rubric in the syllabus to see how this assignment will be evaluated.)
