Paper # 2 Integrated Ecoscan and Biopsychosocial-spiritual Assessment
·
· Pages: 10-12
The purpose of this assignment is two-fold. First, to orient and accustom you to thinking about individuals and systems as interdependent and to provide you with a three-dimensional lens for understanding your client- (Clients can be individuals, families, or an individual in a group). In addition, this will be your first introduction to writing a BioPsychoSocialSpiritual (BPSS) Assessment.
A BPSS is the most common tool that social workers use to organize information that you have gathered about your client which will lead to your conceptualization (or formulation) of why you think your client is experiencing a particular problem at a particular moment in time. This data and conceptualization are essential for developing an appropriate treatment plan. Most agencies that you work at will require some version of a BPSS; some will be very brief, and others will require a longer, more narrative format. Because we are approaching this as both an academic exercise as well as a clinical intervention, citations are required (minimum of 6). As social workers, the focus of the information we gather should always be strengths-based and rooted in our understanding of how micro, mezzo, and macro factors influence our clients’ functioning.
The paper is divided into sections to help you organize your thinking about how the BPSS and Ecoscan are integrated. Please use headings when writing your assignment.

(If your client does not live in the community where your agency is located, you may study either community or both communities.) * Please note health safety conditions
Questions to think about as you explore the environment:
· What is the physical appearance, noise level, and density of the neighborhood?
· How might your client experience themselves in the context of this community? For example, might your client feel a sense of belonging or a sense of being an outsider?
· What is your experience of walking *or driving* around this neighborhood?
Gather current data about the community using websites including government census data, national data for populations, and local/community websites around areas of specific interests along with various informants in the agency or neighborhood. Answer the following questions that are specifically relevant to your client making sure to appropriately cite the resources that you used to gather the information.
· What is the ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic makeup of the community in which you are placed? What is the fiscal budget for public education in this area? How does it compare to budgets of other areas?
· What are the concerns, if any, relative to environmental justice in this community?
· If a client has a medical need, where is the closest health center/hospital? Is this health center/hospital accessible? Does it offer culturally and linguistically appropriate services?
· If a client has a housing and/or food-related need, what services are available and accessible? How far would a client need to travel to access fresh food?

Introduction
· Agency is called Pathway to possible. Is an agency that provides housing, support, and advocacy for people with cognitive and developmental disabilities and their families while erasing barriers, building confidence, empowering independence, and expanding opportunities that enrich their lives and their communities.
· Student’s role is to support, encourage and engage them in any activities.
· Information of the client system: Allice is a 45-year-old female, Caucasian, single and Jewish. She works at a college not far from where she lives. She wipes the dining tables at the college. She lives in a residential group where they are 8 members, four upstairs and four downstairs each person has his or her own room, but they share the dining areas and the rest of the areas. Some clients go to day programs, others go to work and some no longer work due to covid19 situations, and some stay home for some reason. The environmental context is physical, I go there during the day and it’s in a residential area, quiet.
Mezzo and Macro considerations
· The community is surrounded by schools and local organizations/stores that help clients to work in their preferred job, and transportation when they need to go for day programs and work. Support directly these clients experiencing a challenge with mental/emotional and physical health issues to socioeconomic, familial, and cultural hardships.
Physical appearance is a white community with a quiet environment. West Newton’s median real estate price is 1,010,538, which is more expensive than 89.3% of the neighborhoods in the U.S. The average rental price in West Newton is currently 3,348, based on Neighborhood’s exclusive analysis. The average rental cost in this neighborhood is higher than 71.7% of the neighborhoods in MA. Newton is an urban neighborhood (based on population density) located in Newton MA.
My clients experience a sense of belonging because in this community more people in west Newton choose to walk to work each day (13.1) than almost any neighborhood in America. So, my clients like walking around and sitting outside so this is a good community for them. And being in a community with educated individuals is respectful, welcoming, and understanding.
My experience is like the community because it is peaceful, and you do not expect any violence or unlawful things to happen. Hence making me secure while moving around/ driving.
Answer the following questions that are specifically relevant
Boston’s Beacon Hill blue-blood streets, Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish enclaves, and Los Angeles’s Persian neighborhoods. Each has its own culture of the residents who call these neighborhoods home. Likewise, each neighborhood in America has its own culture, some more unique than others, based on lifestyle, occupations, the types of households, and importantly on the ethnicities and ancestry of the people who live in the neighborhood. Understanding where people came from, and who their grandparents or great-grandparents were, can help you understand how a neighborhood is like today. In the west Newton neighborhood in Newton, MA, residents most commonly identify their ethnicity or ancestry as Italian (22.4). There are also a number of people of Irish ancestry (22.0%) and residents who report English roots (12.9%), and some of the residents are also of Asian ancestry residents (10.8%), along with some German ancestry residents (9.1%) among others. In addition, 14.3% of the residents of this neighborhood were born in another country.
In addition, some neighborhoods have residents that are more educated than others. Neighborhood Scout’s exclusive analysis reveals that43.5% of the adults here have earned a master’s degree, medical degree, Ph.D., or law degree than other neighborhoods.
When it comes to health concerns, hospitals are accessible, one of the best hospitals is within the community, just 1.9 miles and it provides all kinds of services.
The community has a variety of support groups such as Newton community service centers which serve infants to seniors. It has a well-established daycare that provides scholarships and works with agencies such as protective services and welfare. Though none of my clients lack housing, in case of transportation to go to the day program and work, there is a ride to call and schedule for all the days they want.
