Essay 2 – “Where are you going?”

      After listening to many different paths of dancers, artists, and others during our interviews, I have started to think of possibilities of where I want to go in life. As of right now I see myself going in any of three different ways. These paths including dancing in a company of some sort, owning and opening my own dance studio, and being a choreographer/stay home mom. Within these jobs, there are different opportunities in different areas and locations. Therefore, exploring my options for each decision can be helpful to my success and finding the right location for myself. 

            My dream has always been to dance in a contemporary company, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, however now that I have matured more, any contemporary, jazz, or even modern company would be something I am so interested in. I would hope it would be decently close to Iowa, so I am close to my family since we are so close with each other. Although, if opportunities arise, I am willing to follow my dreams and then come back later. I would hope to be able to perform throughout the year, it is one of my favorite things, make connections with people and the dance community, and to not be scared or hesitant on anything I decide. I want to really focus on how important it is to just breathe and take things in. The more I am able to chill and relax, the more open I am, and not by being too scary. Some steps I could take to get to this dream of mine would be to make connections prior to auditions. The more respect you have on others, the more they want to work hard and try. Dance can be challenging mentally and physically, but I am someone who never knows when to take a break. The more I can listen to what I need the more I will be able to support myself. 

            Another dream/goal of me has always been to open my own dance studio. I have danced since the age of two, which has allowed me lots of time in the studio. I have worked in a dance studio for many years, and from those experiences I have seen what I love and dislike from each and evert studio I have worked at or for. When thinking about the idea of opening my own studio location plays a huge factor. There are so many dance studios around, especially in the Des Moines area. Competition gets intense when there is a big environment with lots of competitors in one area. I would strive to make every dancer feel welcome, lover, and cared for. I also would try my best to make them extremely well rounded. Dancers have better outcomes when they can do everything. Lastly, in order to get to those hopes and goals brought in, success so incredibly important. Examples being, making sure every kid feels welcome, loved, and cared about. I also would need to research the different locations of studios near the area you were choosing. In advance, having a business background would help prepare me more about the owning portion. Learning how to control websites, and all different forms of social media, how to get your studio out there, and to distribute the differences on why it is so much better than every other studio.

  One other profession that I had never really thought about until recently, is choreographing. I have gotten so into choreographing, and the process that goes along with it. I love the feeling of ‘being stuck’ or having ‘too many options.’ If I were to take this path, I would for sure have to get more knowledge on pricing different things such as how much a dance choreographed by me would be. Finding and brainstorming costumes and the story behind each piece. Finance would be huge. I would also have to be patient, with children, because they have very soft hearts, and everything is such a big deal to them. In order to get to where I would want to be as an end goal, the more pieces I get to choreograph, the more experience. The more experience I get leads my name to being known throughout the Midwest. I would also have to have some business background to make a website page, social media accounts so it is shared for anyone to see it on all accounts. 

 I feel as though that I am a very experienced dancer, in many accepts of this art form. I grew up with my dance teacher always making me do every class offered, and I just always worked so hard. I am a pretty diverse dancer which can help me in the dance world, where I am able to try muldtiple do. Personally, for myself, it is more of a mental practice than a physical practice.
