Choose 10 chemicals from the lists below. You should select a minimum of 2 chemicals from each list. Using the Chemical Reactivity Worksheet, determine how to best sort the 10 chemicals. You have 3 storage spaces available, with each space only being able to hold 5 chemicals. 1 of the storage spaces is kept under an inert atmosphere. The figure below shows this configuration;
Chemical 1a Chemical 1b Chemical 1c Chemical 2a Chemical 2b Chemical 2c Chemical 3a Chemical 3b Chemical 3c Chemical 4a Chemical 4b Chemical 4c Chemical 5a Chemical 5b Chemical 5c Container 1 Container 2 Container 3 (Inert Atmosphere)
Prepare a short 1-2 page report justifying your sorting selections using the Chemical Reactivity Workbook (insert CRW worksheet from AIChE program as appendix). Generate a compatibility chart for both the entire selection of chemicals as well as for each container. You should have 4 compatibility charts (3 if one of the containers is empty). You should be attempting to minimize incompatibilities. Depending on your selections, it may be impossible to fully eliminate all chemical incompatibilities. Full points for this assignment is given for justification of your sorting selections (not for eliminating all incompatibilities). Hint: for determining what should be kept under an inter atmosphere, check out SDS’s to find what chemical might be pyrophoric or interact dangerously with moisture in air. The Worksheet should list air and water reactivity in the Chemical Intrinsic Hazards Section.
Chemical List A Hexane Benzene Ethanol Tert-butyl bromide Phenol Chemical List B Decanoic Acid Hydrofluoric Acid Ammonia Nitric Acid Chemical List C Iron (III) chloride Lithium Copper (II) Sulfate Calcium Carbonate
An example of both using the chemical reactivity worksheet along with the expectations of the report are included in the chemical worksheet tutorial video. If you have trouble accessing the video please contact me as soon as possible.
