It is important for me to know the NAEYC health standards, especially because I have a desire to work with disabled children. Children come in many different shapes, sizes, colors, and backgrounds. Therefore, all children also will come with many different health issues and from all kinds of different situations. Dealing with children that have known chronic conditions makes knowing that the NAEYC standards are vital for a healthy environment. Knowing the protocols for hand washing, food preparation, emergency medical care (CPR) and common first aid will make the immediate area safer for not only myself, but also those I am trying to educate. Health records are in place for many reasons, it ensures the well-being of each child, helps to maintain a helpful environment, protects the child’s health and controls infectious diseases from spreading. Once I start my teacher career, I would ensure that I review over each children’s health records and made sure that I am fully aware and understand any and all of their allergies, and reoccurring conditions associated with their disability. I would also train the children to use the proper hand washing procedure to the best of their abilities. Therefore, slowing the spread of bacteria and viruses, which has an even greater importance when dealing with children whose overall health has already been compromised. Furthermore, I think it would be a positive idea to create an "At-A-Glance" phone directory sheet, which would have each child’s name and primary care doctor as a reference to use in case the parents are not available during a non 911 emergency. I feel this extra non-required step would make for an even safer and healthier environment for children to learn.
