INDICATIONS FOR SURGERY: Patient is a 67-year-old man who had spinal cord stimulator implanted
approximately five years ago. He comes back because of lack of functioning in this system. Decision
was made to proceed with removal of the old batteries and replacement with new ones. The patient
understands the risks and benefits of the procedure.
DESCRIPTION OF SURGERY: The patient was placed in supine position, and the area where the
batteries were located on the left side was prepped and draped in the sterile fashion. The patient
was infiltrated with lidocaine 1 percent. It was reopened with a #15 blade, and then the batteries
were removed from the pocket and disconnected from the lead wires. A new battery system was
reconnected. Wound was closed with #3-0 Vicryl and staples for skin.
