Primary Uterine contractions (involuntary) Contractions cause the cervix to efface and dilate so that the fetus can descend the birth canal. Contractions push the fetus downward and pull cervix upward. The cervix then becomes thinner and shorter _ffacement/Uilation by vaginal exam: Described by: Frequency: beginning of one contraction to the beginning of another. o Duration: Measured in minutes or fractions (+ % minutes). Contractions happening every 2 minutes can reduce fetal oxygen supply. Duration of contraction is measured in average number of seconds. Ex. Contractions are lasting 45-5( seconds.
