Cultural competence in a healthcare organization

What are the benefits of cultural competence in a healthcare organization? Cultural competence is the ability of healthcare providers and organizations to meet the cultural, social, and linguistic needs of their patients. Our country (as well as others) are rich with diversity. "Benefits include increased mutual respect between healthcare workers and patients, increased trust, and promotion of patient responsibility and empowerment in their own healthcare." (Medcomm.com) The US has individuals who have come from all over the world to live and build a life here. It is not uncommon for a provider to see patients from many cultural backgrounds in the same day. As the countries diversity continues to grow so will the need for our healthcare professionals to grow along with it. "Sensitivity, compassion, understanding, and acceptance of patients with different values, beliefs, and behaviors are essential qualities for those who work in the medical arena".
