Recreation/Leisure Services Industry Analysis
Industry Analysis Project overview:
As we have noted in this course, leisure/recreation services represent one of the largest industries in the United States. It is estimated that Americans spend over $800 billion in public, commercial, and private not-for-profit leisure and recreation agencies each year – with around $930 billion spent just on domestic travel in 2018. This is big business! The Recreation/Leisure Services Industry Analysis project is intended to help students better understand the value, scope, and importance of recreation and tourism within our society. To this end, this assignment asks students to research a distinctive segment of the recreation/leisure services industry, ultimately sharing this research with the class via our class Canvas media gallery. Broad industry segments for investigation include, but are not limited to the following: New Hampshire Travel and Tourism Industry in US Industry Analysis Paper

• Therapeutic Recreation (focusing on creating recreation opportunities for individuals with cognitive, intellectual, and physical disabilities)
• Youth Programming (after-school, summer camps, youth sports)
• Festival and Event Planning (music festivals, concerts and other special events, weddings)
• Campus Recreation (university recreation centers)
• Intramural Sports Administration (university, professional, community intramural activities)
• Fitness Management (Gyms, athletic clubs, yoga studios, etc.)
• Outdoor Recreation Management (state parks, national parks, US Forest Service)
• Venue Management (stadiums, arenas, sports complexes, music/art venues)
• Travel and Tourism (resorts/spas, local and regional travel, destination vacations, museums and cultural heritage sites)
• Outdoor Education (at-risk youth programs, experiential education, adventure therapy)
• Convention and Conference Planning (corporate events, special interest conferences)
• Entrepreneurial Recreation (small businesses servicing niche markets)
• Military Recreation (MWR – Morale, Welfare, and Recreation programs and facilities)
• Action and Adventure Sports (surfing, mountain biking, sailing, kayaking, snowboarding, skiing, skydiving, etc.)
Assignment Directions: You are responsible for researching and analyzing one segment of the recreation/leisure services industry; producing a written industry report (50 points), and a “rich media” project (50 points) with relevant information re. a specific topic within your respective industry segment.
Part I. Industry Analysis Paper (50 points possible). Papers should be approximately (5) pages long (double-spaced, APA) and should be submitted directly into Canvas on or before the due date posted on your course schedule for this class.
Although there are exceptions, all papers should include the following:
A. Segment Introduction: Introduce this segment of the recreation/leisure services industry by providing a general overview – include a general definition of the segment, provide examples of service providers, and set up the overall project.
B. Scope of the Industry: Relevant facts related to the industry segment, including participation numbers, resources/facilities, expenditures, revenue streams, groups served.
C. History: Brief history of the segment, including original purpose/intent, origins, point at which it grew in popularity, where the segment is today vs. where it was at various points throughout its historical trajectory.
D. Value of the Industry: Including economic impact, environmental impact, social impact, and individual impact.
E. Associations/Organizations/Resources: Include descriptions of relevant professional and trade organizations devoted to this industry segment; include examples of service providers; are there any additional resources devoted to the industry segment?
F. Local New Hampshire/New England Resources: Develop a list of contact agencies/organizations/businesses in the local, state or regional area. Include agency name, brief description, location, and contact information. Be comprehensive, but reasonable when developing this list! (3-4 sites is great if possible)
G. Job Outlook/Employment Types: Include types of jobs in this industry segment, job outlook, qualifications, salary ranges, opportunities for advancement, etc.
H. Trends/Challenges: What are some of the trends and challenges facing the industry? Who are the industry’s competitors? Who is the primary target market/market segment? Does the industry project strong, flat, or negative growth?
I. Additional Information Related to the Industry: Include any additional information related to the industry segment. Include information taken from personal interviews, key statistics/indicators, or other information that will enable you to obtain a better understanding of this aspect of recreation/leisure services.
J. Reference List of Sources: Provide a citation for ALL sources used. Use APA or similar for referencing.
Part II. Rich Media Project (50 points possible). In addition to the paper, you will develop a “rich media” project with key information related to your respective industry segment. Rich media projects will be submitted into the Canvas Media Gallery, under the Industry Analysis module. During the final two weeks of the semester we will be showcasing a batch of rich media projects that will contribute to our final exam content. Details discussed as we get closer.
So, what is rich media? For our purposes, we will define rich media as any combination of graphics, audio, video, and animation used to convey information or ideas. At their best, rich media projects integrate multiple media formats (e.g., sound and video) to maximize engagement, interactivity, and data density. They can help you to connect with your audience on multiple levels, enabling you to powerfully communicate your message.
Although there are exceptions, all presentations should follow the guidelines below.
A. 3-5 minutes in length. This may sound long, but it is surprisingly hard to condense and consolidate your main ideas into a 3-minute video. Most of you will be forced to edit and cut sections to meet this requirement.
B. Creativity/originality. You are not expected to simply outline your Industry Analysis paper in this rich media component of your project. Rather, I encourage you to creatively educate your classmates (and me!) on the topic. Have fun with this part of the assignment, and use as much or as little from your paper as you feel appropriate, so long as you stay on topic.
C. Permission and copyrights. It is very important that we all abide by the copyright policies outlined in class. Details on this discussed as we get closer.
D. Approval. Once your rich media is completed, I will need to approve the project before it can be shown to the class. We can discuss this as the need arises.
E. Timely submission. Rich media projects should be submitted as .mp4 or .mov files into Canvas by the due date on our course schedule.
Just a quick reminder to please NOT PUBLISH your rich media projects in a public forum, like YouTube of Facebook. These are meant for IN-CLASS use only.
You should give me Rich media first.
