On January 8, 1942, Stephen Hawking was bom in Oxford, England. He was the oldest of four siblings and shared a home with his mother, father, and three other siblings. Hawking’s father was from Yorkshire and went to Oxford University to study tropical medicine. As a result, he frequently traveled to East Africa. Hawking’s mother was from Scotland and an Oxford University graduate in philosophy, politics, and economics. While his father continued to pursue his medical studies, his mother became a teacher. Hawking was eventually bom soon afler the family relocated from London to Oxford. At that time, the Lufiwaffe was attacking London. Hawking went to an all-girls school when he was younger; it took males age 10 and under. To enroll in the all—boys school, he took a test a year in advance. His intellect earned him the title "Einstein" from his classmates. He was very interested in math, science, and sciences. It is safe to state that the work of his father had a significant influence on this. Hawking frequently received invitations to visit his father’s laboratory, which piqued his interest in the topic even more. At first, his father would tutor him in arithmetic at home, but he finally had to stop because Stephen was more knowledgeable than he was. Hawking completed his elementary and middle school coursework successfully, but once he started high school, things got serious. He concentrated heavily on mathematics and physics in his final two years. He had a professor by the name of Mr. Tahta, who he really admired. Stephen even created a basic early computer with the aid of his professor. Hawking received a scholarship in the natural sciences and graduated from high school at the age of 17. The headmaster at St. Alban’s claimed that Hawking was too young to take the entrance exam at the time, despite the fact that Hawking passed it with flying colors. Hawking’s father had a dream of his son attending the University of Oxford, the same school that he once attended. Even while this was a fantastic chance for him, Stephen was unfortunately
surrounded by students who were considerably older than him. He claimed that during his early years, he experienced loneliness. Hawking joined the boat club to combat this loneliness. Through this encounter, he made several new friends. Unexpectedly, Hawking did not put forth the most effort as a student while attending Oxford. In fact, he studied hard in preparation for his last third-year exam. He received a first-class degree and went to Cambridge to pursue research. Although Stephen had a great chance, his health also began to worsen at this time. He said that in his final year at Oxford, he saw that his clurnsiness had increased. Afier receiving an ALS (Motor Neuron Disease) diagnosis shortly afier tuniing 21, Hawking was informed that he had two years to live. After his diagnosis, Hawking struggled with depression, but despite this, he wished to spend his final years contemplating the universe’s physical composition. Stephen was one of the first to discover that because of the Big Bang’s immense pressure, black holes could arise in the early universe. In a model he created with Jim Hartle, Stephen put out the idea that space and time are not limitations of the universe. His wife Jane Wilde encouraged him and offered her support. Within three years of that night, he had married her afier meeting her through a common college friend. Together, they had three kids. His condition progressively worsened until, by the late 19705, he had almost no mobility lefi and could hardly be heard speaking, aside from a very small number of his family and associates. Because of this, a Cambridge scientist created a speech-generating device that allowed Hawking to type on a computer with tiny motions of his body and have a voice synthesizer pronounce what he wrote. In recognition of his achievements in science, Hawking was elected to full fellowship at Gonville and Caius College. During his two years as a research assistant. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1974 when he was 32 years old. As the Sheman Fairchild Distingiished Scholar, the highest honor at Caltech, Hawking visited the universin with his family. His wheelchair was considerably more easily able to use the facilities at this school. He conducted an important seminar when he was there. He took a flight to Rome to receive the Pius XI medal afier being given it. In his capacity as a Fairchild Scholar, Stephen spent a few weeks at Caltech almost annually from 1991 until 2013. Approximately 310 years afler Isaac Newton became its second holder, Stephen was chosen to serve as the seventeenth Lucasian Chair of Natural Philosophy holder in 1979. Stephen served this position with distinction for 30 years before attaining retirement age in 2009.
