There have been multiple false claims since the 2022 Federal Election that the ‘Voice to Parliement’ is synonimous with a Third Chamber of Parliement. These features of the ‘Voice to Parliement’ are similar to other statutory bodies that make recommendations to Federal Parliement, for example the Human Rights Commission.
The primary reason why many Australians support the ‘Voice to Parliament’ is because is gives constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians. This is important because the constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians has been a growing social movement in Australia for decades. As a result, the proposed ‘Voice to Parliement’ can be seen as form of political consitutionalism, where Australians vote for political representatives – the Labor Party in this case – that have the same values (constituional recognition of Indigenous Australians) as Australian voters.
