PROCEDURE: The Olympus video upper endoscope was passed into the upper esophagus. There was a stricture in the distal esophagus. Endoscopic photographs were taken. The scope would not pass. A balloon dilation was performed in gradations from 36 French to 45 French. The balloon was inflated for 60 seconds. Visualization showed appropriate mucosal dilation. The stomach and duodenum were otherwise normal on endoscopic exam. The patient will take Omeprazole 20 mg q day and have a repeat balloon dilation to 48 French in one month.
