Reading Investigation Speech

READING INVESTIGATION SPEECH:
Time to become an advocate for your students. We have learned who they are and what they need in a
school and from school personnel. Now it is time for your voice and knowledge. This assignment
requires you to schedule a virtual meeting (Zoom, Google Hangout, etc.) with the administration at your
school, the local school board, or another influential group of educators. What do you discuss? What are
you passionate about? What do you want to change the most as it relates to how the district views the
students? Create an advocate speech on behalf of a subgroup of middle school students and use research
as PROOF that your ideas have been tested and proven, and others are exploring this topic as well.
You will select a noteworthy area of investigation related to the different subsects of young adolescents
that we have discussed (i.e., how we treat students with disabilities, what we need to do about the
academic achievement gap, how we define gender in our schools, the myths about the characteristics of
young adolescents, etc.). Then, you will read at least two scholarly articles from your selected area.
Articles should be from a peer reviewed journal, a chapter or two from a book, or an entire book. Text
that has been presented in this class will NOT count towards the two sources. You may use them in the
speech, but two additional sources must be added. Select interesting, worthwhile works on which to make
your presentation, which will accomplish three things:
1. Argue carefully why this information merits the attention of principals, superintendents, and
policy makers. Why should policy makers pay attention to this topic?
2. Highlight the most important information from the reading. How does the information from the
article support your argument?
3. Apply the information to the “real-world.” That application may come from the chapter itself,
but you should add an application (a show and tell) that does not appear in the text. Explain
how the information from your source could improve instruction or culture within a school by
providing an implementation strategy (i.e., adding an exploratory class, implementing a new
school policy, changing current classroom layouts, etc.). Propose a “solution” to this issue that
could be implemented in a school or school system.
