Outcomes and Events
Suppose we describe the weather as either sunny (S) or cloudy (C).
a) List all the possible outcomes for the weather on two consecutive days.
b) If we are only interested in a number of sunny days, what are the possible events for the two consecutive days?
Definitions:
Outcomes are the most basic possible results of observations or experiments. For example, the possible outcomes from administering an experimental drug may be a favorable reaction, no reaction, or an adverse reaction.
An event consists of one or more outcomes that share a property of interest. For example, when a die is rolled, the event of rolling an even number can be satisfied by any one of three outcomes: 2, 4, or 6.
[Reminder: Resist the temptation to look at my response prior to trying it out for yourself. The struggle of going through the thinking process further develops and enhances your problem-solving abilities, and overall quantitative reasoning skills.]
My response:
a) The possible outcomes for the two days are (SS, SC, CS, and CC).
b) If only concerned with the number of sunny days, the outcomes are (0, 1, 2).
