Mr. Williams is an 82 year old man who has been living alone for four years, since his wife died. His living conditions are quite poor as he has become a hoarder and it is difficult to find any floor space in his small bungalow. He has not been taking care of himself and has not been eating properly, or taking care of his hygiene. Mr. Williams has become quite isolated, although he does have one friend who tries to visit him on a weekly basis. He relies on the local shop when buying his groceries. Mr. Williams has been visited by Social Services, following a call by his neighbour who is concerned about is health and wellbeing. Following this visit, Mr. Williams has been admitted to the local cottage hospital suffering from dehydration and malnutrition. His body is in poor condition and he has infected feet. He also appears to be exhibiting early signs of Dementia.
Mr. Williams was not happy about being admitted to the hospital and, for the first couple of days, refused to speak to staff or to co-operate with them when they were trying to give personal care. He has not eaten very much and seems quite disinterested. He has, however, started to talk to one of the daytime nurses whom he seems to trust. A Social Worker is also visiting Mr. Williams. She is trying to make an assessment about whether it is safe for him to return home, or whether he needs to go into care. Looking at the above case study, identify and discuss the nurses role is when caring from Mr. Williams.
