Discussion> Mobile Technology Use
Mobile learning technology is any type of learning that can be performed by using a mobile device such as, but not limited to, a smartphone or tablet (Kim & Park, 2019). Because almost everyone in today’s society has a smartphone, it only makes sense that mobile learning technology is growing in popularity (Kim & Park, 2019). Mobile learning technology comes in many forms but two of the most popular forms are educational applications and access to research information (Kim & Park, 2019). All nurses from beginner to expert can benefit from educational applications and accessing nursing research from a mobile device. Educational applications are especially useful during nursing school (Kim & Park, 2019).

Two advantages of mobile learning technology are that it is fast and it can be taken anywhere (Curran et al., 2019). Nurses and other healthcare providers can access information at the click of a button which greatly improves knowledge and patient safety. For example, applications that provide information about medications are extremely helpful. Providers can simply type in the medication and find out what it can be used for, dosages, medication interactions, side effects and many other things. Two disadvantages of mobile technology are increased costs and security concerns (Curran et al., 2019). Any type of technology is expensive not only to start but to maintain as well.
A nurse informaticist could be tasked with many different roles regarding mobile learning technology. One role a nurse informaticist might be tasked with is integrating a new mobile learning application into a healthcare facility. Another role a nurse informaticist might be tasked with is teaching providers how to use a new form of mobile learning technology. Each of these tasks would be challenging in their own ways. Integrating a new mobile learning application into a healthcare system would be extremely challenging as the nurse informaticist would have to prove a need, form goals, plan the process, implement the new application, and evaluate the effectiveness of the new application.
