Downs Syndrome happens when a child is born with 47 chromosomes instead of the expected 46 in a person. Downs Syndrome affects many systems in the body that causes both structural and functional defects.

There is no exact cause for Downs Syndrome but it is caused by the child having an extra chromosome genetically from the parents.
A risk factor that affects the chances of a child being born with Downs Syndrome is the mothers age. At 35 the risk is 1 in 350 chance and then when the mom is over 40 it is a 1 in 100 chance of the child getting downs syndrome.

With proper early help for the child to take cacre of themselves and find social belonging the chances of long survival are likely. A good support system is also needed because Downs Syndrome is very hard on a person and they need constant support. Now a days as long as the child was taken care of as a baby and was prior healthy they are likely to live a full happy life.
Support Groups
The number one support groups for a child with Downs Syndrome is the family unit. This source of support is the most helpful to the child and has the biggest impact in their lives.
Making friends with other kids that have this disorder.
There are many big public support groups for people with this disorder where it is free to go to talk and share stories and be accepted by their peers.
