Emphasis is placed on the interactions between the nurse and the patient. The nurse must focus on the patient’s verbal and nonverbal behavior and ask clarifying questions to the patient so the nurse knows what he or she needs (Alligood, 2014).

Health is a continuum. If a patient has a problem or concern and the nurse interacts with them until they understand and then intervene to correct the problem they leave the patient in a healthier state than they started (Alligood, 2014). | Different cultures have different beliefs about health and different practices they engage in to stay healthy. It is important to find out any alternative medicine or herbal remedies they may be using as well as any beliefs that would prevent them from taking part in conventional treatments (Alligood, 2014). | Health is on a continuum and the level of health is what is desired by the person. Health includes physical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects. Health is the reason that the nurse and person interact. | |||

Not a lot is mentioned about the environment in Orlando’s theory. However, the environment will influence the patient’s responses so the nurse, during their interactions, if they are observant, should be able to pick up on any things in the environment that are either adding to or taking away from the quality of the interaction or the quality of the patient’s care (Alligood, 2014). | Culture has an impact on his or her environment. Their environment can either be promoting a healthy lifestyle or causing them to engage in behaviors that can be detrimental to their health. It is important to understand what a person’s environment is like so they can be educated on practices they may need to change and care can be individualized to them (Alligood, 2014). | Environment is both intrinsic and extrinsic to the person. Environment impacts the overall health of a person and the nurse should promoter positive alterations to the environment to affect the best health. | |||

Based on how person, health, and environment come together the nursing interaction is either good or bad. It is good if the nurse was focused on the patient and therefore able to understand his or her needs and help alleviate any problems. It is considered bad if the nurse is not focused on the patient and does not take the time or effort to understand the patient’s need and intervene to help him or her (Alligood, 2014). | Culturally competent nursing care can be provided if the nurse is conscious about obtaining information about the individual and incorporating it into their care (Alligood, 2014). | The nurse is a professional health care provider who develops therapeutic relationships, based on a person’s needs to bring about the most optimal health outcome possible. |
