Using therapeutic communication is a skill many of us learned while in our undergraduate studies. The National Commission on Correctional Health Care defines therapeutic communications as “the face-to-face process of interacting that focuses on advancing the physical and emotional well-being of a patient” (National Commission on Correctional Health Care, 2020). In other words, nurse practitioners use this communication method to provide information while simultaneously providing support during interactions with their patients. There are a variety of different therapeutic techniques that can be used for patients. While some choose to used active listening and others recognition, all techniques are helpful and can be specific to the person that would make the interactions and relationship between nurse practitioner and patient better (National Commission on Correctional Health Care, 2020). Many times therapeutic communication is put to use in the psychiatric setting. However, I think therapeutic communication can be beneficial in all interactions with patients, not just with psychiatric patients. It has been found that the use of therapeutic communication in the primary care setting has resulted in“ improved client satisfaction and, potentially, increased adherence to treatment plans” (Bentley, Stirling, Robinson, & Minstrell, 2016). Nurse Practitioners who both engage in conversation but also provide an environment for listening build better rapport with their patients. This can lead to a more open conversation about the patient’s health, which could ultimately impact their direction and management of their care. In my clinical practice, I try to use therapeutic communication that I think is best suited for the patient and situation.

Week 3 Discussion 1 by E (Therapeutic Communication Responses Paper)
A therapeutic relationship should be established between a nurse and a patient in order to promote the importance of health (Edelman & Kudzma, 2018, p. 105). One of the tools to achieve this type of relationship is to develop an effective communication. Therapeutic communication is defined as a persistent collaboration between healthcare professionals and patients that could lead to positive health outcomes and patient satisfaction (Fite, Assefa, Demissie & Belachew, 2019). This can be demonstrated by nurses through several ways such as attentive listening, silence, focusing, asking open ended questions, clarification and verification, exploring, paraphrasing, reflecting, restating, providing leads, summing up the discussion, recognition, acknowledgement and acceptance, and the nurse’s willingness and unconditional offering of self to the client. The building of trust with openness, honesty, caring and compassion is developed by the patient when a therapeutic communication is practiced by the nurse practitioner (Registered Nursing.org, 2020). Trust should be maintained in order for patients to cooperate fully on their plan of care. Thus, creating a healthy environment and at the same time, attaining nursing goals.
In a journal entitled, “Therapeutic communication and relationships in chronic and complex care (2016)”, it was mentioned that the quality of care that nurses provide to patients with complex or chronic medical conditions is affected when communication difficulties are experienced. The researchers provided communication skills that a nurse should possess in caring for these patients. The ability of the nurses to listen, explain, develop trust and empathy is essential in maintaining a therapeutic relationship. Hence, patient satisfaction is accomplished in which had been revealed to have a substantial contribution to psychological and physical health outcomes. In addition, nurses should also focus on their own health in order to sustain the demand of the profession (Brownie, Scott & Rossiter, 2016).
