Sorting the data in ascending order
WEEK 4 2ND DQ
27 3 3 11 12 3 4 14 6 4 3
a) Find the mean and median margin of victory.
b) Identify the outlier(s) in the set. If you eliminate the outlier(s), what are the new mean and median?
[For practice, make an attempt to answer the question prior to looking at my response.]
My response:
a) Sorting the data in ascending order, we will have:
3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 6, 11, 12, 14, 27
Mean = [(4 * 3) + (2 * 4) + 6 + 11 + 12 + 14 + 27] / 11 = 8.182
The median is the middle value which is equal to 4.
b) The outlier is 27, because it varies from the rest of the data by a larger value. Without the outlier, the mean and median are:
Data set (without the outlier) in ascending order: 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 6, 11, 12, 14
Mean = [(4 * 3) + (2 * 4) + 6 + 11 + 12 + 14] / 10 = 6.3
Median = (4 + 4)/2 = 8 / 2 = 4
When the means in sections (a) and (b) are compared, it can be seen that the outlier (27) dragged the mean upward while having no impact on the median.
