Practicum Problem or Population of Interest
In this assignment, you will discuss your problem or population of interest in detail. You also need to list at least three individual behavioral objectives (using verbs that can be measured) that are based on your overall objectives for this course, as well as your population or problem of interest. An example may be as follows (these are just examples):
By the end of this course, you will:
Critically appraise the evidence related to a given subject and its application to current nursing standards and patient safety.
Evaluate racial and ethnic disparities in type 2 diabetes in Vietnamese immigrants in South Philadelphia and Pennsylvania.
Briefly describe your preceptor and his or her academic qualifications and experience and provide a brief description of the practicum site. Describe your population or problem of interest and the challenges, issues, or concerns you might have about investigating this topic. What objectives have you set, and how do you plan to meet these objectives? How is your practicum topic impacted by evidence-based practice?
Meet with your program director, course faculty, and preceptor to discuss an appropriate population or problem of interest for your clinical practicum. Each week, you will be retrieving various articles pertaining to your population or problem of interest. In Week 1, you will be introducing your topic of interest. In Weeks 2–8, you will find articles (or evidence) that support various areas of your topic.
Write your initial response in 300–500 words.

Week 2 Discussion
Linking Theory and Practice
Throughout your nursing education, the importance of theoretical foundations has been presented in multiple domains. Soon, you will be using theory to guide change in your practice. Why is theory even necessary? Former Secretary of State George Schultz (a doctorally prepared economist), wrote a song that sums up the importance of theory:
A fact without a theory
Is like a ship without a sail,
Is like a boat without a rudder,
Is like a kite without a tail.
A fact without a figure
Is a tragic final act,
But one thing worse
In this universe
Is a theory without a fact.
Everything we do in nursing should be supported by evidence. Theories provide a framework on which to link the evidence. Whether we are looking to write a policy or a nursing standard or make a change in practice to promote patient safety, we look to research (evidence) to guide us in our decision making. Visit the South University Online Library and retrieve two peer-reviewed articles that demonstrate theoretical foundations (or the relationship between theory and evidence) regarding your capstone topic. Critique each article, highlighting the strengths and the weaknesses of each article. Interpret the statistical analysis and significance of results. Finally, analyze the feasibility of applying the theory to your population or problem of interest in your current practicum setting.
Write your initial response in 300–500 words.

Week 3 Discussion
Health Promotion and Disease Prevention
In this assignment, we will discuss health promotion and disease prevention as they pertain to your capstone topic. Everything we do in nursing should be supported by evidence. Whether we are looking for ways to improve a hospital department’s internal efficiency or looking how to improve a population’s outcomes, there is underlying evidence that supports the principles of health promotion and disease prevention. Visit the South University Online Library and retrieve two peer-reviewed articles pertaining to psychosocial research and your topic of interest. Critique each article, highlighting the strengths and the weaknesses of each article. Interpret the statistical analysis and significance of results. Finally, analyze the feasibility of applying this evidence to your topic of interest in your current practicum setting. Both articles should directly correlate Topics and Objectives of Healthy People 2020 (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2014) within your chosen topic.
Write your initial response in 300–500 words.

Week 4 Discussion
Organizational Leadership Evidence and Application
In this assignment, we will discuss organizational leadership evidence as it pertains to your capstone topic. Everything we do in nursing should be supported by evidence. Whether we are looking to understand the organizational barriers that exist to change a policy or conduct a root-cause analysis to understand organizational failure, we know all too well that there are types of organizations that are more prone to success and those that are more prone to failure. Visit the South University Library and retrieve two peer-reviewed articles pertaining to organizational research and your topic of interest. Critique each article, highlighting the strengths and the weaknesses of each article. Interpret the statistical analysis and significance of results. Lastly, analyze the feasibility of applying this evidence to your population/problem of interest in your current practicum setting. Both articles should support nursing standards and patient safety within your chosen topic.

Week 5 Discussion
Peer Review of Curriculum Vitae
For this assignment, upload your CV to the Discussion Area by the due date assigned. Your course faculty will assign you two classmates’ CVs to critique using the evaluation rubric.
Click here to view the evaluation rubric.
Your CV is just one of many artifacts that should be included in your portfolio. Receiving feedback from your classmates on your CV can help you identify your areas of strength and areas for improvement. It is also important to understand the difference between a CV and a resume. Potential employers usually request a CV from advanced-degreed nurses. It is also important to note the significance of updating your CV every month. Routine updates allow you to keep an accurate record of all relevant professional accomplishments. This practice will also permit you to submit an updated CV at a moment’s notice when that perfect job becomes available.
Post the completed evaluation rubrics for your classmates’ CVs to this Discussion Area by the due date assigned along with thoughtful, encouraging, and formative feedback. Be sure to provide substantive feedback for any area of the rubric you scored less than optimal.

Week 7 Discussion
Quality Improvement and Evidence Application
In this assignment, you will discuss quality improvement evidence (research) as it pertains to your capstone topic and clinical practicum. Everything we do in nursing should be supported by evidence. Quality improvement initiatives that address practice patterns, healthcare organizations, and variances in health outcomes, in order to promote safe, efficient, ethical, and patient-centered care are often the hallmark of many doctoral projects. Visit the South University Online Library and retrieve two peer-reviewed articles pertaining to quality improvement (or quality improvement initiatives) related to your topic of interest. Critique each article, highlighting the strengths and the weaknesses of each article. Interpret the statistical analysis and significance of results. Finally, analyze the feasibility of applying this evidence to your topic of interest in your current practicum setting.

Week 9 Discussion
Clinical Seminar
In your clinical seminar this week, you will deliver a 15- to 20-minute professional presentation of no greater than 20 Microsoft PowerPoint slides (exclusive of references) to your classmates. The presentation will be presented asynchronously.
The presentation will be a collation of the evidence (articles) you have retrieved about your capstone topic (population/problem of interest). Although you will use the articles that you have retrieved each week as the basis for your discussion question, the evidence will be presented in one culminating project in support of nursing standards and patient safety toward your topic of interest. In addition, the presentation will offer an introduction to your problem or population of interest, clinical (PICOT) question, and significance to healthcare and advance practice nursing and discuss your “next steps” as you move forward in your advanced field experience. You may want to take careful notes as you critique your articles each week because you will apply this information in your clinical seminar project this week.
While critiquing your weekly articles, you may find similarities or distinct differences within the evidence. Explore the reasons for this. Take note of the strength of the evidence reviewed. In your presentation, present and analyze the evidence and how it supports nursing standards and patient safety. Your classmates will have an opportunity to ask thought-provoking questions about the evidence you present.
Possible format for professional presentation:
Introduction
Topic area
Question
Significance
Overview of clinical practicum
Analysis of evidence
Next steps
The Microsoft PowerPoint presentation slides should follow the guidelines for a professional presentation.

Week 10 Discussion
DQ1 Professional Development: Where Do We Go from Here?
In this assignment, you will discuss barriers to portfolio development. Identify three barriers to portfolio development. For each barrier identified, identify two productive strategies that can eliminate this barrier.
Your textbook discusses many reasons for portfolio development. Discuss how a comprehensive portfolio can help you meet your specific career goals.
DQ2 Reflective Wrap-Up Discussion
In every course throughout the DNP program, we have finished with a discussion question that promotes self-reflection. Today is the day to remember how far you have come since day one and how close you are to the finishing line.
Over the past ten weeks, you have learned about evidence-based practice or research through the discussions and assignments in this course and through your practicum experience. Reflect on what goals were successfully met during this course and what goals you have yet to achieve for both your DNP degree and your professional nursing career. How have you met the DNP Essentials in the course activities? Please be specific.

Week 5 Project
Midterm Evaluation of Clinical Logs
You will submit clinical logs and narratives this week. Clinical logs will be recorded in CORE, and narratives will be submitted to week 5 project.
The purpose of these logs is to provide validation of clinical outcomes and supervision of professional development.
Your logs should include the following two parts:
Successful completion of CORE hours, with satisfactory explanation of each daily activity. Satisfactory midterm evaluation by mentor.
A written narrative covering the following items:
Weekly reflection summary providing an overview of clinical or scholarly activities during the reporting time period (Weeks 1–5).
Commentary and evidence (examples) of progress toward achieving specific course objectives.
Reflections that include thoughts, feelings, and correlation to the South University Five Pillars of Nursing (professionalism, critical thinking, holism, communication, and caring) on the overall experience and correlate to The Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice. Click here to learn more.
Note: Each week, your reflection should be a 1- to 2-page summary of the week’s activities. This should result in about 6–10 pages of the overall reflection summary for week 5.
Document all the hours accumulated up to this point in your clinical logs. In order to stay current, update the logs after every clinical day. You will also document your participation in activities for achieving the course objectives. These activities can include, but are not limited to, workshops (you may include brochures or participation certificates) and business or professional meetings (you may include agendas and minutes, as appropriate).
Logs do not require a standard APA format but should reflect the ability to write in a scholarly, succinct, and professional manner. You should have a title page and list any references in APA if you choose to include them.
Ensure that your preceptor submits your evaluation electronically through CORE.
Your clinical logs and narratives will be placed in your portfolio at the end of the course.

Week 10 Project
Learning Portfolio
Your portfolio is due this week.
As a reminder:
A learning portfolio provides evidence of learning by demonstrating a connection between your personal learning objectives, activities related to your clinical experience, and course objectives.
Your portfolio is a dynamic and personally tailored document that provides a summary of learning events. It may be formal, but it may also include diverse events from outside clinical work that have contributed to your development and achievement of both personal and course objectives. The entire content of the portfolio does not necessarily need to be comprehensive, but it needs to reflect the ongoing achievement of course outcomes through supervised clinical practice at the clinical doctoral level.
The given list of items highlights documents that you should have at this point in the program. You may have more. Please remember to incorporate items from your DNP program. Items should be current. If you are repeating this course, the instructor will review your last portfolio grade with documents and grade your current portfolio on the basis of your additional submissions or revisions during this class.
Items that are required to be included in your learning portfolio:
An updated curriculum vitae (CV) (a resume will not be accepted)
Personal details (related to nursing), exam certificates, and date of qualification (licensure, certification, etc.)
A concept map (required) that provides an overview of the negotiated contract between a student and the advisor with respect to expected course outcomes across all components of the clinical experience
Career intentions supported by the selected clinical activities
Clinical experiences and their application to course outcomes
Objectives in current clinical placement toward program goals
Supporting activities that may occur external to the clinical experience but supporting the attainment of course outcomes
Preceptor evaluation forms (confidential)
Research experience supporting program progression
Reflective commentary and evidence (examples) of progress toward achieving specific course objectives
Publications
Presentations at local, regional, national, or international meetings
Audit projects undertaken and completed
Teaching notes and critiques of student logs
A summary of clinical experiences or semester with personal reflection
Memorable opportunities and organizational challenges
Seminar from this course (a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation)
Anything else you feel may be relevant
In addition to this list, you may include other assignments from your DNP program that you feel add to your portfolio. Your portfolio should provide the evidence needed to clearly articulate the congruence of your educational preparation with the DNP Essentials. As in past courses, it is crucial to familiarize yourself again with the DNP Essentials.
This should be compiled into a word document, and utilize a table of contents and APA format with page numbers, running head and an updated reference page.
