Emotions and Cognitive Processes
Emotions and Cognitive Processes Summary of Empirical Research Article
Weekly Writing Assignment #1 Modern Research in the Memory Methods Debate What will you do? Find a modern empirical original research article (from 2010 – 2022) on some topic related to memory using google scholar. You are free to choose any general research area as long as the topic directly relates to memory. What is original empirical research? An original empirical research article is an article about research that the authors conducted themselves. They had a research question in mind, designed a study, collected data, analyzed it, then wrote it up. You should not use a book chapter, or a review paper – these are not original empirical articles. You will know that it is original empirical research if the article contains an introduction, method, result, and discussion section. If you are unsure, you can check with me. You must include this article when you turn in your assignment. How to find an article? Go to https://scholar.google.com/ and type in some keywords about memory and whatever topic you want to read about. Articles will appear, and you should read the titles to decide if it seems relevant. If so, then continue on to read the abstract to decide if you want to use it for your assignment. If so, then you will need to get the full text of the article to read. Many articles have free available full texts, but if not, just send me the link and I will get you the full text. If you prefer to use PSYCInfo, you can do that. How to read the article? As you read the article, there are several questions you should be focusing on as you take notes. Introduction Section What is the purpose of this research? Why are they conducting this study? What is the research question? What is relevant background information? What are their hypotheses/what do they expect to find? Method Section Who participated in the study? What did the participants do? What materials did they use? Results Section Do not spend too much time here. Skim this to get a general sense of the analyses they conducted and what they found Discussion Section What are the main findings? (usually summarized in the first paragraph) What do the main findings mean? What are the implications and applications of this research? What to write in your paper? The first section (about two pages) of your paper should include a summary of this empirical research article. Tell me about the background information, their research question, hypotheses, general information about the design, their main findings, and what the findings mean. Next, you will relate this article to the debate about memory research. In about two pages, describe how this research fits with the Neisser and Banaji/Crowder perspective. How would Neisser view this paper? How would Banaji/Crowder view this paper? Use evidence and terms from the lecture and readings to support your views. The purpose of this assignment is to show that you can apply the debate to modern research articles, summarize research, and clearly demonstrate your knowledge of the two perspectives. How will you be graded? All weekly writing assignments are worth 20 points. Here is the breakdown of the grading for this assignment: Article Summary (10 points) Did you accurately describe the article? Did you include all relevant information? Is this an empirical research article related to memory? Connection to the Debate (8 points) Did you accurately describe the memory debate views? Discussion Questions:
1. Throughout these chapters we saw that there is a weak relationship between confidence and accuracy in your own memory. So the questions fort his week are: -What does this mean for your beliefs about your own memories? Do you still trust your memories? Even the ones you’re most confident in? -How should you talk about memories with other people? What should you say when you disagree? What should you tell someone who is extremely confident in their memory but likely wrong?
2. In Chapter 9 we saw that people are very confident even when they’re wrong. Why do you think that is? We saw a possible explanation in the Confidence and Accuracy paper, but I want you to be creative and try to come up with your own ideas for why people are so confident in inaccurate memories. -Why are people so confident in inaccurate memories (be creative, come up with new ideas!) -Why do you think some people scored perfectly on their flashbulb memory recall? There were three participants who got all details right, even though most got a lot wrong – how is that so?
3. Just like last week, you started off this week recalling a memory, but this time it was a flashbulb memory. Here you should analyze that memory. Tell us what flashbulb event you were recalling, what was your memory recall like, do you think it was accurate (is there anyway you can confirm or disconfirm your memory), how confident are you in that memory? You do not need to include the actual memory recall in your response.
