Discussion Question 1: Government economic studies reveal that young adults, not middle-aged or older adults, are having the most difficult time in today’s economy. Although the nation’s labor market shows a decline in the unemployment rate, the percentage of young adults, ages 18 to 24, currently employed (54 percent) is at the lowest level since the government data collection began in 1948. If you were working for a national survey organization doing a general public survey of young adults and older adults, what topics and questions would you design into your survey to elaborate on this finding?
Discussion Question 2: One design problem in the development of measurement instruments concerns the sequence of questions. What suggestions would you give to a novice researcher designing his or her first questionnaire?

RESPONSES STUDENT 1 (TK) (100-150 WORDS)
If I were working for a national survey organization investigating whether young adults, not middle-aged or older adults, are having the most difficult time in today’s economy, the questions I would design might include the following:
1. Classification Questions
a. Age group ranges: 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50+
b. Geographic region: divide country into quadrants
c. Education: completion of high school, post-secondary: undergrad, certificate, graduate
d. Employed: FT, PT, Casual/Contract, more than one job
e. Vehicle: own, lease, rideshare
f. Home ownership: rent, own
g. Income range: 0-40k, 41-60k, 61-80k, 81-100k, 100k+, prefer not to answer
h. Recycle: yes, no
2. Target Questions
a.Do you feel that you will own a home in the next 5 years?
·
·
i. Why or why not?
b.Have you secured employment in your chosen field?
c.What are your biggest concerns?
·
·
ii. Having enough money left at the end of the month
iii. The environment
iv. Social justice or responsibility
v. Commute to work, option to work remotely
Keeping in mind generational behavior, I would be trying to prove what the younger generation values. I suspect that there is a higher value put on work life balance also known as working to live versus living to work in the younger population. I also sense that there is greater value put on environment and social responsibility which may change behavior around recycling and owning vehicles and homes. It would also be interesting to see the value shift from the older generation that valued full time employment and stability which may not be quite a concern with the younger generation.
I would start with target questions to keep interest and then finish the survey with classification questions to be able to group respondents.
Discussion Question 2:
If I were giving a novice researcher some advice on sequencing when designing survey questions, I would follow Schindler (2019), that topics need to be ordered by the need to establish and maintain the participant’s interest and motivation to complete. Being sure to capture high interest or human-interest value questions at the start and then going forward, topics should naturally flow from previous questions and attempt to limit jumps between subjects to keep the participant on track. I would also start with easy to answer questions that are quick and then move on to more complex questions that might take more time to answer (p. 307).
Schindler (2019) provides four guidelines:
3. Order topics based on participant interest, not research objective or investigative questions.
4. Order topics to establish participant rapport, interest, and maintain engagement
5. Cluster related topics together
6. Order classification questions at the end of the survey
Reducing the number of “I don’t know” or neutral response options will also ensure there is more complete data collected. When creating target questions, order should start with general questions and move to more specific within a topic. This concept is called the funnel approach and allows the learning of the participants frame of reference which will allow the researcher to get as much desired information while limiting distortion of previous question answers on later ones within a topic (p. 308).
I would also remind the novice researcher to keep the classification questions to the end, while they are high value for the researcher so they can classify and group respondents, it is not of interest to the participant so it could impact survey completion if they put those questions up at the front of t

Question 1
The questions I would add to a survey to gather information for such findings that there is decline in unemployment rate in our economy for young adults would be:
1.Are you currently employed? Yes No
a. If yes, how many hours do you work?
b. If no, how long have you been unemployed?
2.Are you currently in Further Education? Yes No
3.What difficulties do you face as a young person in finding a job?
c. Lack of experience
d. Age
e. Gender
f. Qualifications
g. Other Please state:
4. What aid and support could be put in place to help young people finding a job?
5.List 3 sources you would use in searching for a job?
6.Do you believe there should be equal minimum wage for all ages? Yes No
h. Please state how much you think this should be.
7. Are you satisfied with your current job? Yes No
8. Are you Head of Household or others in your family are employed too? Yes No
9. How many jobs have you done during/after your graduation?
These questions should help provide insight to knowing if the current findings are true and unemployment rates are declining or not. It will also give us insight into how young adults are facing tough times finding jobs in our economy and if they have jobs if they are satisfied or not.
Question 2
I would advise him or her to begin with widely general questions that are simple for the participants to answer. Having easy questions at the top of the questionnaire serves to welcome the respondents and convince them to continue with the study. It also creates a sense of positivity and creates a foundation for the participant's confidence to answer complex and sensitive questions at the near end of the questionnaire.
