Audience Analysis activity
Please do the following:
Working with your group choose a topic that is of interest to all of you. Find a literature review on that topic from a journal.
Individually, scan the article and take notes about any features that stand out (you will individually post these in the Notes assignment this week).
Do some research about the journal to help determine the journal’s specific audience. I suggest looking at the journal’s website (if there is one) for things like scope or a description of the journal and reading submission guidelines and/or Calls for Papers for the journal. I would also suggest looking through the Tables of Contents for an issue or two to see if there are particular themes/topics/etc. that the journal seems to address. You may divide this task up by group member or do it together. If you divide it up, you need to have written information to share with your group members.
As part of the research in number 3, determine what citation style the journal uses. Then do research to see what disciplines or fields use that style. If the style is journal specific (so used only in this particular journal, you do not need to research disciplines).
As a group, discuss who you think the specific audience for this literature review is. You must consider elements beyond content to make this determination. Please consider demographic elements of audience as well as field or expertise elements. You need to come to a group decision. You can have this discussion asynchronously in email, or in a Google doc, or in a Teams chat.
Produce and turn in a document to me that provides me with the following:
A description of common features of the two literature reviews and any differences the group found important
A citation for the group’s literature review in the style used by the journal
A description of the specific audience for the group’s literature review
Evidence for this being the specific audience. This evidence must include things beyond the topic and content of the review.
A short assessment of the level of expertise in this topic for the specific audience (for instance, this is designed for experienced neurosurgeons who have not used robotics-enhanced surgical techniques, so they have extensive expertise in neurosurgery, but minimal expertise in robotics-aided techniques). This is for the group literature review not the sample.
A short description of the methods your group used in working together (for instance, if you divided the research task, who did what? Did you all compose in a single Google doc, or did you each write a piece of the final document and a “project manager” joined those pieces into a single coherent document? How did you come to your group decision–majority vote? Consensus? Compromise?)
