Mr. Carson is a 72-year-old male who was recently admitted to inpatient rehabilitation following a 3-day hospitalization for weakness, shortness of breath, dehydration, and fever. Mr. Carson was diagnosed with COPD about 6 months prior. Recently, to help his breathing, he had been sleeping in a recliner at home. Doing so brought on severe lower back pain, which became progressively debilitating. Mr. Carson fell while trying to get from the living room to the bathroom and could not get up. His neighbor found him on the floor and called 911.
Rehab evaluations were completed this morning, with the plan of care to include mobility training, ADL training, balance and endurance exercises, and patient education. You are to begin therapy with Mr. Carson today. In your chart review, you see the following medical history: COPD, hypertension, anxiety, hyperlipidemia, GERD, Smoker x 50 year, quit 4 years ago.
You also see the following medication list:
Salmeterol 50 mcg 2x/day
HCTZ 25 mg 2x/day
Valium 5 mg prn
Lisinopril 20 mg daily
Omeprazole 40 mg prn
Simvastatin 20 mg daily
The attending rehab physician also prescribed oxycodone/acetaminophen every 4-6 hrs for LBP and twice daily albuterol nebulizer treatments. Mr. Carson is currently on 1.5 Liters of supplemental oxygen.
